“Hey Jude” is one of the most storied songs in the history of Rock music. The song is basically all Paul McCartney who wrote it in the midst of John and Cynthia Lennon’s divorce. The song was originally titled “Hey Jules” and was meant as a way to comfort Julian, John and Cynthia’s son, who was 5 at the time.

Paul McCartney then changed the title to “Hey Jude” because it sounded better. John Lennon was very impressed with the song, calling it one of his favourite McCartney-penned tunes. But little does the general public know that an original version, way more blunt than the final single, was recently found by McCartney’s estate. This is the version I am presenting here.

‘Norwegian Wood’ is a song written by John Lennon, about an affair. The song is notable for its dylanesque vibe and its Indian influence, brought by George Harrison’s early use of the sitar.

Jumping on the “My 9 Albums” trend. For a year now, I’ve been using @last_fm to track exactly what I listen to on Deezer. This is way, I’m trying to avoid picks that are merely posturing (sorry, but unfortunately, I don’t listen to To Pimp a Butterfly every day; in fact I haven’t listened to it again since it came out, however brilliant…).

Unsurprisingly, most of my picks are bands of old white guys, even though there are a few classic Vaporwave albums. Even though I’ve only been tracking for a year, the picks are already starting to feel representative. The problem with albums lists is that they don’t take into account playlists, and I have quite a few of those.

As you may have heard, EMI recently released the Super Deluxe edition of Rubber Soul, boasting four discs with new mixes, mono and US versions. But the most interesting part of this new set has to be the second disc, which offers a deep dive into the creative process of the Beatles whilst making this album.

A few welcome surprises there with the several iterations of “Norwegian Wood” - the second version stands out especially by leaning into an oriental vibe. The recording seems to predict the psychedelic and Indian-inspired extravaganza of tracks such as “Love You To” and “Tomorrow Never Knows”.

Other curiosities include a riff-free “Day Tripper”, a scrapped organ solo on “In My Life”, and the strange (but kind of delightful) throwaway “Little Girl”.

By the time the Beatles made Rubber Soul, John Lennon had been obsessed with The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan since early 1964, when the band was in Paris. Dylan and Lennon met in person on 28 August 1964 at the Delmonico Hotel in New York, where Dylan famously introduced the Beatles to marijuana.

Lennon admired Dylan intensely and was a little insecure around him. Dylan, for his part, was known to be guarded and prone to testing people, and the Beatles' world was a very different scene from the Greenwich Village one he came from. You can hear Dylan’s influence in songs like “Norwegian Wood” and “Nowhere Man”.

Dylan would seemingly mock “Norwegian Wood” with “Fourth Time Around” on the album Blonde on Blonde a few months later.

When I was 13, in the mid-2000s, the two biggest bands were Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Green Day had become really big thanks to their album American Idiot, which had revitalized their career.

Their political stance against the Iraq War and Bush wrapped in very infectious Pop Punk had brought them a legion of new fans, who were sometimes unfamiliar with their early 90s work (including me).

On the other hand, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were also benefiting from an exceptional creative and commercial streak with Californication (1999) and By the Way (2002). I can’t remember a rivalry per say, but both bands were incredibly popular.

“Wild Honey Pie” was composed by McCartney during a collective improv in India. Back home, McCartney decided to record the track on his own while the others were all busy. Short, experimental, and very bizarre, the song baffled many people at the time and its inclusion on the White Album remains questioned to this day.

The track was apparently included because Pattie Boyd liked it. Some critics have also argued that the track contributes to the experimental-anything-goes vibe of the White Album, and also serves as a remarkable transition between “Bungalow Bill” and “While My Guitar”.

“Junk” was written by Paul McCartney during the Beatles’ stay in India. It features a melancholy tone which could express McCartney’s state of mind at the time. After Brian Epstein’s passing, the future of the band was becoming more and more uncertain. Engineer Geoff Emerick reports seeing McCartney looking depressed often during that time.

As for “Junk”, even though it was recorded as part for the Esher Demos in 1968, it would not find its way onto an album until McCartney’s 1970 debut. Even though critics were harsh towards the album overall, they singled out the track’s quality, along with “Maybe I’m Amazed”.

“All Things Must Pass” was originally attempted by the Beatles in January 1969 during the Get Back/Let It Be sessions. Harrison was very enthusiastic about the song and was looking for a Robbie Robertson/The Band-type of sound. Characteristically, Lennon and McCartney did not share his liking of the song, and chucked it in the bin after 37 takes.

According to two Beatles historians, it was a complicated time for Harrison who was seeing his compositions being routinely rejected by the duo, in spite of his songwriting maturity. It seems hardly a coincidence, therefore, that the Get Back footage has him mentioning making a solo album with all of his rejected material. This idea, of course, went on to become the famous triple album All Things Must Pass, almost two years later.

“Not Guilty” is the greatest song the Beatles never released. Recorded during the making of the White Album, the song was supposed to be Harrison’s fifth track on the album. Both John Lennon and (unusually enough) producer George Martin greatly admired the track. So much so that, when George Martin came forward to the band with a proposed single disc version of the album, the track was included.

It is hard to figure out why the track was discarded in favour of arguably lesser material like “Wild Honey Pie” and “Bungalow Bill”. Some critics point to the difficulty of the track: “Not Guilty” reportedly took more than one hundred takes to perfect, and the version that is on Anthology 3 (take 102) sounds unfinished.

The unusual time signatures proved very difficult for Ringo to achieve properly. Other critics point to the lyrics which are quite clearly directed at the other Beatles and perhaps a little too abrasive.

Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942, in Liverpool, England. He co-founded The Beatles in 1960 with John Lennon, and the band became one of the most influential acts in music history. After the Beatles' breakup in 1970, he formed Wings and continued a prolific solo career.

He's known as one of the most successful songwriters and musicians of all time, credited with writing or co-writing dozens of chart-topping hits. McCartney has received numerous honors, including knighthood in 1997 and multiple Grammy Awards, and remains active in music into his eighties.
