Who wants to learn how to write poetry on a rainy Saturday? Lots of kids, it turns out!

Thanks so much @andrearowe_coastwriter, Michael and the team @little_bookroom and Jaye and the team @marymartinbooks for being the vision, enthusiasm and hard work behind the first ever Melbourne Kids BookFest. 🥳And lovely to see fellow authors @andrearowe_coastwriter @dgraybarnett @emma.bowd.au @waywardfancy today, and more.

And thank you parents and carers, for nudging your young folks towards books.🥹

I hope this lovely festival keeps going forever and a day 🙌🏾📝. Wish I could have stayed around the whole two days to be honest, but (minor) surgery for one (adult) child on Thursday and a birthday for another today conspired against me.

📸Thanks @andrearowe_coastwriter for the photo - I am always absolutely terrible at taking them or making sure someone else is, and she always so generously and supportively pops up everywhere to make sure we’re all covered 🙏🏾 by @maxinebeneba

Such a super way to find story sunshine on a rainy Saturday! Throw together a bunch of storytellers, and open up the fun to kids who are keen to read, write and illustrate at the inaugural Melbourne Kida Book Fest!

From illustrator battles to poetry workshops, meet the author moments, and behind the scenes study making ... this has been a super two days at this sold-out family event.

Hurrah to all, and happy birthday to @jakemintonillustration who won the illustrator battle!

Sorry I had to hightail it out of there before the last event but there was a lot of joy in the room at @southgate_melb with @marymartinbooks and @little_bookroom by @maxinebeneba

Happy 16th to my smart, funny, kind, gorgeous youngest today.

This is her, randomly climbing onstage during the 2015 Stella Prize ceremony (I was shortlisted for my short fiction collection Foreign Soil) like: “I don’t care who they just said won this, that was obviously a mistake, I’m going up there to correct it”. 🤣😂💪🏾💀

As purveyor of the of the short form, I don’t know if a picture is worth “a thousand words”, but this one certainly says a lot!

*Thanks so much to whoever thought to capture this! If anyone knows who took the photo, let me know and I’ll credit them. by @maxinebeneba

SO EXCITED! We have just got our shipment of Maxine Beneba Clarke’s cards. Made of her remaindered recycled books, limited edition signed and numbered. My photos cannot capture the energy and brilliance of these cards. We haven’t got many so get in quick - I think we are the only Adelaide stockist. Thank you @maxinebeneba xx by @maxinebeneba

I’ve been thinking about running this course for years, but decided it’s finally time. Thanks so much to the Faber Academy @faberwriting for partnering on this. I think there are about 12 spots, and it’s online. Link in bio for full details. Runs April-June 2027. by @maxinebeneba

The devastating truth is that if you’re extremely lucky, some books will be earners as bestsellers and the others will be earners as business cards. This time, metaphorically AND literally. by @maxinebeneba

This lot of 20 handmade cards (signed, dated, numbered, Ltd edition) went off to Goodwood Books this week, so if you’re in Adelaide, you can now get my cards from there, likely starting from late next week. Thanks @goodwoodbooks for your support 🥰 by @maxinebeneba

Shoutout to the kids who came to my poetry workshop today at West Footscray Library with @chestnuttreebookshop. We had almost a full house! We wrote acrostic poems, haiku and rhyming poems. Thanks grown ups, for bringing your kids to poetry in the school holidays - it was so lovely to see young people finding joy in words, and imagination, and writing, and sharing their work with each other.

And on my way to drop some books back to the bookshop, they told me two of my handmade cards (made from my remainder book stock) have sold since I dropped them off 2 days ago. I also had another bookstore reach out to stock the handmade cards, so will be sending off another lot of 20 tomorrow to Adelaide.

I’ll be doing more of this in the coming months and years: in person, handmade, self-published, direct to bookshop/ reader.

The revolution is analogue.💪🏾
