I’ve been experiencing something of a training slump recently where all of my performance metrics have been pretty poor, and I want to share how I’m navigating this period

I’m around the heaviest bodyweight I’ve ever been, my strength numbers are lower than what they were a year ago, I’m sprinting significantly slower than I was earlier this year and my shins are too sore to actually get a good amount of approach jumping practice in, so of course my approach vertical is well down as well.

I coined this term as the “athletic dip”

Where an athlete decides to switch from one performance discipline focus to another, there will be a period where performance in both the old area of focus and the new area of focus both suck compared to where you want them to be

Earlier this year I was 100% focused on Bobsled style training, shorter sprints, more weight room work, more slow power development, less elastic development and fast SSC work accompanied by less of an emphasis on having a lower bodyweight

Since shifting my training emphasis to more elastic development coupled with cutting bodyweight I’ve been in a period where I’m running slower than I have in almost a whole year, jumping significantly lower than I have in over a year and having a significantly lower relative strength level than I have in over a year as well.

Not to mention that my body feels cooked all the time and motivation and desire to train are at an all time low.

This is the bottom of the dip between the peaks of two disciplines, it’s not a bug, but a feature of transitioning and being patient enough and waiting for the necessary physiological adaptations to take place.

This is where trusting the process and having a plan are so important.

I know it won’t last forever, and eventually I’ll be where I want to be with my elastic development, but for now I’m embracing the dip for what it is and accepting the rate of transformation despite wanting it to go much faster.

Hope this helps anyone going through something similar! by @maxkgperformance

Yes it’s more technical than a weighted jump

No it’s not an equivalent stimulus

Great athletes get great results regardless.

It doesn’t matter which coach you put them in front of (within reason) they’ll still succeed.

The transfer of S&C to on field performance is too general and diffuse for a coach to actually take tangible credit and say,

“They succeeded because of MY coaching!”

They were going to do all the work anyway.
They were going to eat sensibly anyway.
They were going to prioritise sleep and recovery anyway.
They were going to develop technically in their sport anyway.

All you did was GUIDE them.

And yet, every serious athlete still needs A coach, they still need SOMEONE to outsource their athletic development to.

If someone is financially responsible and wants long term growth it doesn’t really matter WHICH broad stock market index they invest in to grow their finances, they’ll all grow over time, but they still need TO invest.

The same can be said for dedicated and serious athletes who want long term athletic development, it doesn’t really matter which (sensible) S&C coach they invest in for the long term, all that matters is that they DO invest in ONE.

As coaches we need to understand this, we are just here to be a background net positive influence in an athletes life, literally just being grateful to be a part of the furniture in the house of an athletes long term development. by @maxkgperformance

There’s 100% a trade off between being the biggest, most jacked version of yourself and being the most athletic version of yourself.

Everyone has an optimal BW at their given height for sprinting and jumping performance maximisation

Jumping will be pretty light

Sprinting will be even lighter for most

RELATIVE strength and power are the name of the game to max out these outputs

Being lighter also means that plyos are less hard on your joints and you can tolerate a lot more elastic volume

Moral of the story is that you may need to shed some weight if you want to max out your elastic sprinting and jumping development specifically. by @maxkgperformance
