This week I traveled to China for a very important (to me) meeting with a new sponsor.
I’m extremely excited to announce a new partnership with Kailas FUGA!
There are many reasons I am making a big transition at this point in my career. I see Kailas FUGA as being a key partner in the coming years and their commitment to the outdoors for over 20 years, quality gear, and most importantly to me, youth running is something that is very important to how I continue my running career.
I have been impressed with how seriously they take getting people into the outdoors, not just selling equipment. Obviously selling gear is important to them and everything I’ve seen has been impeccably designed and most importantly, works, but as a privately held company and a CEO who’s life revolves around mountain sports, they are able to retain what is important to their character and culture.
A mural on the wall at the HQ says ā€œwork hard, play harder!ā€ That really defines how they approach what they do and how I expect the core culture of any partner of mine to be.
So here’s to the next chapter! Max King as a Kailas FUGA athlete! So frickin excited!

Huge thanks to @apa.athletes in help getting this deal signed! And to Kailas FUGA taking a chance on a still sorta fast old ā€œbut not yet deadā€ dude!

I’ve been heading out to Steens Mountain for two weeks for the past 15 years to run with 400 high school athletes at the Steens Mountain Running Camp. I attended camp back in 1996 for one session as a sophomore athlete and the lasting influence it had on my running career can’t be understated. It formed who I became as an athlete, so when the challenge to run over the entire mountain was thrown out, I knew this was something I had to do and I knew just the right person to do it with, @jackson.brill .
Watch as Jackson and I attempt the Steens Traverse and put together our BIG DAY to ā€œoveremphasize to trivializeā€ the challenges we put ourselves through.
Watch the whole film at the link in bio.

Last day of mountain training with a shortened Three Sisters Traverse before heading to Bhutan. The @snowmanrace is right around the corner and I can already tell it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Fingers crossed that I don’t repeat my China altitude experience from two weeks ago. We’ll be staying a few nights at 12k then the race will be 4 nights at about 15k with some ā€œrunningā€ up to 18k. We’ll be better acclimated this time around.😜
Also hoping the once-in-a-lifetime experience I’m referring to isn’t a life flight helicopter ride either.🤪

It might not have been the best race I’ve ever run…
But in the end I’m glad I saw it through.

You know when before a race you think ā€œI got this!ā€, then once in the race you’re only thought is ā€œI don’t got this.ā€ Well, yesterday was like that.
The first photo is the ā€œwhat did I get myself intoā€ face. Thanks for that @irunovermountains!
That was the most brutally tough 100k course I have ever run. The mix of varying terrain from high mountain cow trails (as in, not trails) to downhill roads to muddy 30 deg climbs and quad destroying descents. This race really did throw everything at you to destroy your body.
And destroy me it did. Early on as we neared the high point the altitude at 14k just took me out. I couldn’t balance, so I was falling all over the place. I just needed to go down. I was tempted to dnf after falling and tweaking my knee a few times but knew if I went down I might feel better. I had resigned myself to just slogging it out if I could get through the rest of the course as a long day out. Once down to low elevation everything came back. I felt better. My legs came back and my will to race came back as I picked off a guy ahead of me. I decided to keep moving and keep trying to catch people. Coming back from about 13th place to 7th was one of my biggest turnarounds in a race. Pretty happy and proud of myself for not throwing in the towel when I really wanted to and continuing the fight.
There was more than once during this race where I just thought what we were doing was a little insane. I mean the 3300ft climb at mile 50 with calf deep mud was kind of a kick in the nuts. I think it took me 3hrs to climb 3000ft! In the end, over half 400 person field dropped out.
The big collation prize was running slow enough across the mountain to get the full alpenglow of Mt Gongga when it is a rare sight because it’s always clouded over. That was spectacular!
And in the end it did turn out that I did have that in me. It just came with some questions in the middle.
.
A huge shout out and thanks to @yotta_c and the full FUGA team for all their help this week. And To @kailasfuga for inviting me to race over here.

After a group run to the largest FUGA store in the WORLD! It’s onward to Moxishen up in the mountains. It was great to get to tour around Chengdu for a few days but it will be nice to be in a small mountain town.
The trip up to the mountains was pretty incredible! Super scenic and also a marvel of engineering! Probably 30 miles of tunnels (no photos cuz I mean, it’s a tunnel) and huge bridges spanning deep gorges and freeways in the mountains!
More from Moxi Town tomorrow!

Made it to Chengdu! And took in all the things! Pandas, hot pot, bubble tea, city running, and a big beer that turned out to be really expensive because I can’t read Chinese.
It’s been an awesome couple of days and the Panda Research Resort was more impressive than I was expecting. Running in a city is always an experience but Chengdu is a pretty great city to run in.
A couple more things to do in the city before heading to Moxi Town for the race.
