Waystation (2026)

Wood, Acrylic, Aluminum & Steel Hardware, Handmixed Dye Stain

Collaboration between @maxkulchinsky & @tan.boe.

Waystation refers to a stopping point along a journey. This piece is the result of a year long exchange between two friends, conceived as both a functional object and a sculptural work. Designed as a modular, portable, and ever-evolving object, Waystation exists as an exchange between two distinct but overlapping practices: Max Kulchinsky’s work as a DJ, record collector, and Deep Listening practitioner, and Tanner Boesiger’s sculptural furniture design, which utilizes form, friction, and contrasting materials to challenge perception of space. The object is a record of a conversation that is still ongoing, and is being unveiled tonight at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Ultimately, Waystation is built to accumulate interventions over time, across locations, and between collaborators.

Its first major presentation will be as part of a solo exhibition of Kulchinsky’s recent work at The A.I.R. Building in Tokyo in late August to early September 2026, followed by an exhibition in New York City in October. Each iteration will reflect the context it travels through, and invite social engagements including: Deep Listening sessions, DJ sets, and other performances. taken in School of the Art Institute of Chicago by @maxkulchinsky

thanks to the SP team and the 100 people who came to listen deeply to Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key Of Life.”

what a special session! and as I’ve been saying to folks, it was such a success not because of the attendance but in spite of it. it’s rare to get such a large group to all respect getting off their phones and maintaining silence, especially for such a long record.
