Before writing this, I needed silence. I needed time to sit with my thoughts and truly look back at these five years in the USA five years that feel like an entire lifetime. A lifetime made of memories, sacrifices, laughter, tears, growth, and love that words will never fully be able to capture.
Time… this unstoppable thing that never waits and never comes back. And if I could ask for one impossible wish, it would be to live just one more ordinary day one more day at Emmanuel, one more day in Buffalo with my host family. Because those “ordinary days” turned out to be the most extraordinary moments of my life. Pieces of my heart will forever live there.
At 18 years old, I said goodbye to everything I had ever known. My family. My friends. My language. My comfort zone. I left home with a suitcase full of dreams and a heart full of uncertainty, hoping that one day the sacrifice would make sense.
Five years later… it does.
This journey changed me in ways I could have never imagined. I grew up. I learned to be strong when I felt weak. I learned to keep going when things didn’t make sense. I learned to believe in myself when doubt was louder than confidence. I became more mature, more aware, more open-minded. I learned new cultures, new perspectives, new ways of seeing the world. And somehow, along the way, I learned to speak three languages, something that once felt impossible.
I came to the USA chasing a dream: playing basketball in the NCAA. And yes, I achieved that dream. But looking back now, I understand something deeper. This journey was never really about basketball. Basketball was just the reason. The people were the purpose.
Because life is not about how many messages we send, how many calls we make, or how many miles separate us. Life is about the bonds that distance cannot break, the love that time cannot erase, and the connections that quietly shape who we become.
