The last few months have felt like back to back ultra marathons for my brain 🧠🥴 My undergraduate degree was extremely challenging but the PhD writeup is quite a different experience. When you're learning to pass a test you know what the answer should be before you sit the exam but for me the joy of research is that you throw data into your brain, then gradually answers and insights surreptitiously reveal themselves in ways you are often not expecting.The terms capex and opex (short for capital expenditure and operating expenditure) feature throughout my thesis. These terms attempt to separate initial front loaded investment costs – capex – from continuous running costs – opex. In the example of a vehicle, purchasing a car would be the capex whereas fuel and replacement tyres fall under opex. Me and my pal Robbie Sloan colloquially use the terms to describe expenditure of not just money but also willpower, energy, carbon emissions, etc. For example meal prepping is capex heavy in terms of kitchen labour but reduces subsequent daily opex. For me, writing this thesis has felt like dropping an ungodly capex of brain power, time and effort into developing my understanding of my specific subject area. 27 was an absolutely unreal year. I am unbelievably stoked on where my hydrogen research has got to, innumerable epic bicycle sessions were had, along with some wicked eco trips in the modified electric whip ⚡️🌱 It was made great because of the people around me, what a privilege to be surrounded by so many absolute legends.
