EAST. COAST. 7RQ.

Working with these young men and being able to watch their growth was a life-changing experience.

My first interactions were on Zoom screens, choppy internet connections and email chains. Now, I stand before them, watching these WORLD-CLASS-LEVEL MUSICIANS kick the door down and fill the room with clean beats.

There’s no “first quadline” that I’d rather teach than these guys. Exemplary young people who have an unseen level of fight, dedication and teachability.

Thank you, 7RQ, for a wonderful first season of teaching. taken in Dayton, Ohio by @maxpalmer_real

Tour 1 of 7th Regiment. For being my first season as a staff member, and in my home corps, teaching under the people who got me to march in the first place- there’s a lot of perspective I gained.

If I were to be thankful for anything, it would be for the group of staff I got to spend these two weeks with, who supported me, and for also the students for being ready to push themselves unbelievably hard. This experience had a lot of twists and turns, but it was so much better for having them.

~ Reflections on the End ~

The day after my last marimba band concert, I went for a walk. I took the day to just sit, and reflect- and the gravity of what I had accomplished hit me.

If you had told me four years ago that I would be the first person from the UMass Percussion studio to indoor, let alone to this extent- having stayed in MBI, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and having prepared for a recital throughout it all- I would have believed you, but to see it actualized- it’s an indescribable feeling.

But let’s not make this about me. UMass, and the people it brought me close to, are the reason why this was possible. MBI is the reason I kept going. ΦΒΔ is the reason I kept going. And my percussion studio class- Phil, Nick and Parker- were the reason I kept going.

But my journey was not merely difficult because of what I chose to do. It was difficult because there were people who viewed the marching arts, and Marimba Band, as a threat. There were people who didn’t care about me, but tried to tell me what to do. And most of all, there were people who were insecure, and afraid of me.

If you are a young person reading this, you NEED to do what you love. You NEED to. Do not let someone tell you what kind of music you can love and enjoy, because listening to them will kill you from the inside out. So many people will try and get in your way: Professors in midlife crisis, TA’s who are not accountable, messy auditions, insecure/weak white men, stuck up lecturers, and toxic relationships. These things are not just inconveniences. They are obstacles meant to teach you. And you have to tackle them head on, and push through them.

I am grateful for the people who made UMass a community for me. I am grateful for the people who taught me love. I am grateful for the people who helped me. But I am also grateful for the people who tried to tear me down and define me- for they are equally responsible for my success. Because without them, I don’t know if I would have developed the resilience and confidence I have now.

While I won’t say goodbye- since I’m staying in Amherst- I will say…

thank you, @umass . taken in University of Massachusetts Amherst by @maxpalmer_real
