What I Learned from EuroLeague Coaches

When you train with the best — you either grow or you break.

During my career, I had the privilege to work with two EuroLeague-level coaches — Saša Obradović and José Berocall.
Both coached at the highest level — Crvena Zvezda, Monaco, Virtus, Barcelona, Maccabi, Bayern…

I was only 20 when I joined Saša Obradović’s team.
The first months under his leadership were mentally tough.
Everything was faster, harder, and more intense than anything I had experienced before.
He demanded perfection — every second, in every drill.
And my teammates were EuroLeague-level players — killers on both ends of the court.

At first, it felt overwhelming.
But looking back — that period changed everything for me.
It taught me discipline, focus, and what real basketball truly means.

Here’s what I learned 👇

1️⃣ Defense first.
When you’re young, you think offense defines you.
You dream about highlights and points.
But top coaches look first at one thing — can you defend?
Can you bring energy, fight, and heart every possession?
If you step on the court — prove that you deserve to be there.
Every possession is a battle.

2️⃣ Outwork everyone.
Arrive before practice. Leave after everyone else.
Even if it feels like nobody notices — trust me, they do.
Coaches always see who stays longer.
Teammates respect it.
And most importantly — you feel the difference.
Every extra minute of work builds a different kind of confidence.

3️⃣ Enjoy the game.
Pressure can kill your joy.
You start overthinking mistakes, fearing to fail.
But basketball is still the same game you fell in love with as a kid.
The best players never lose that connection.
Play with focus — but also with love.

4️⃣ Stay mentally sharp.
At this level, every word from the coach matters.
Listen carefully. Absorb advice.
Small details separate good from great.
Stay focused, stay humble, stay ready.

Today, I look back with gratitude.
I’m thankful to Saša Obradović — thanks for teaching me toughness and discipline.

José Beracall — thanks for your wisdom and humanity.
We still stay in touch to this day. taken in Paris, France by @maxrise_

It’s all about emotions… and ice in your veins. Part 2

In the first part, I talked about how emotions drive us — they make us fight, dream, and grow.
But when emotions take control — they can destroy everything you’ve built.

Today, I want to share real stories — from my experience as a player and now as an agent.
All of them ended sadly because of emotional, impulsive decisions.

1️⃣ The young talent who quit too soon
A 15-year-old player in a strong European club.
He had potential — real talent — but couldn’t handle criticism from the coach.
Every raised voice felt like an attack.
Two months before the end of the season, he decided to quit.
I asked him to stay calm and finish the year — but he left.
The club wanted to keep him. He ended up without a team.
At 15, that one emotional decision closed many doors.

2️⃣ The professional who walked away
An American player with solid minutes and a coach who believed in him.
But he couldn’t find his rhythm — and blamed everyone but himself.
Before the final game of the season, he just left the team without saying a word.
That single act damaged his reputation — and no club wanted to sign him next year.

4️⃣ The fight at practice
Tension between teammates happens.
But one day, emotions went too far — a player hit his teammate, broke his nose…
and broke his own hand.
Both were fined, and trust inside the team was gone for the rest of the season.

5️⃣ Even coaches lose control
Once, during halftime of a tough game in the VTB League,
our coach hit the massage table out of anger — and broke two fingers.
We still finished the game, but the message was clear:
even leaders pay a price when emotions take over.

💬 The point is simple:
Before you act — stop and ask yourself:

“Who am I really hurting right now?”
In 90% of cases — you’re only hurting yourself.

Sport is emotion. But great players learn to control it.
That’s what separates talent from a true professional. taken in Lyon, France by @maxrise_

It’s all about emotions…and ice in your veins.. Part 1

People who don’t even know all the rules of basketball often say after their first game:

“I didn’t fully understand what was happening on the court, but it was incredible!”

Sport is pure emotion and energy.

For a player, emotions are fuel. They drive you forward, make you train, dream, and fight.
But the same emotions can become a destructive force — ruining your reputation, your relationship with the coach, and even ending your career prematurely.

I want to highlight a few things to avoid.

1️⃣ Arguing with the coach during practice.
Sometimes disagreements happen — that’s normal. But turning them into shouting or conflict is a mistake.
You can ruin relationships, undermine team discipline, and create an image of a “difficult player.”

2️⃣ Getting offended during a game.
Sometimes a coach takes you out of the game, and it you don’t like that. But going to the bench with a dissatisfied face, mumbling under your breath, and demonstratively sitting at the end of the bench is a childish reaction.
You must accept the coach’s decision and stay focused.

3️⃣ Talking behind someone’s back.
After practice, the locker room is a place where it’s easy to “chat.” But when conversations turn into complaints and criticism of the coach — you’re not undermining his authority, you’re undermining your own.
Respect and reputation are built over years but can be destroyed in a minute.

‼️ Always resolve any misunderstandings only personally with the coach, one on one. It always earns respect and shows maturity.

In the second part, I’ll share real stories — from my career as a player and as an agent. That’s where emotions were at their peak. taken in Lyon, France by @maxrise_

One of the most mentally challenging moments for a basketball player is the transition from youth basketball to a professional team. I want to share a few key factors that will help you adapt more easily during the first years of your pro career:

1️⃣ Mistakes will happen. Coaches will yell. Veterans may criticize. THIS IS PART OF YOUR GROWTH. Don’t take it negatively.

2️⃣ The main thing is to learn quickly. Don’t let the same mistake become a habit.

3️⃣ Listen carefully. Be ready to process quick instructions right in the middle of practice.

4️⃣ Don’t be afraid to ask. If something isn’t clear—ask immediately. Pretending you understood will only lead to bigger problems.

5️⃣ Look for support. If the head coach is too tough, talk to an assistant after practice. Showing a desire to improve and working on your mistakes will earn respect from coaches and teammates.

Remember: your first mistake does not define you. What matters is how you respond to it. taken in Lyon, France by @maxrise_

28 years in basketball. 17 of them — at the professional level. Hundreds of games. Different countries. Different rhythms. Different people. And one constant — basketball has always been a part of me.

My name is Maks Konate.

• At the age of 6, I stepped onto a basketball court for the first time — not knowing that this game would become my entire life.
• At 15, I signed my first professional contract.
• What followed were 17 full seasons in pro basketball: national team, international clubs, Europe, victories, defeats — and a kind of experience that no one can buy.

That’s hundreds of games, countless emotions, and lessons I carry with me to this day.

Today, I’m on the other side — I work as a basketball agent. And now I see the game from a very different angle. I no longer look only at the ball — I look players in the eye. And what I see is a fight. Not against opponents or coaches — but a fight with yourself. The toughest battle of all, where emotions and understanding of the game’s reality decide everything.

Over the years, I made many mistakes. And I watched my teammates and players make the same ones. That’s when I realized — I want to help.

I truly want talented athletes and everyone who loves basketball — to win. On and off the court.

That’s why I’m starting this blog — a place where I’ll speak honestly about my experience: from the eyes of a player, an agent, and someone who knows the industry from the inside.
I’ll talk about what usually stays behind the scenes — the emotions, the pressure, the mental chaos, the lack of support, and the silence when you’re expected to be strong.

In the next posts, I’ll share real stories. My vision and some truth about the game no one tells you.

Stay tuned! taken in Lyon, France by @maxrise_
