POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I am so excited to announce The Native [Nigerian] Podcast, a very special archival project we have been dreaming and working diligently on for the past year.

The Native [Nigerian] Podcast is a platform to document black origin stories and create global connections between diasporic archives and practices. Our first season features a Nigerian curator, a South African architectural historian, a Brazilian artist, a British-Ghanaian architect and educator, and four British-Nigerian entrepreneurs working across fashion, digital experiences, plastic, and palm liquor.

The title ‘The Native [Nigerian]’ reframes the condition of ‘native’ beyond the Nigerian context by examining the ways in which oppressive and extractive systems have altered communities globally. In each episode, we explore the complexities of Black identities across the globe, and deconstruct the concept of belonging in intimate conversations addressing themes of colonial legacies, care, kinship, and migration. In partnership with our featured guests, we create a new space for discovery and unpack stories about the mind and body, origin, process, culture, space, and environmental agency.

This project has been a source of personal learning about African history, evolving into our mission to bridge traditional practices with modern systems by fostering a collective knowledge archive. We invite you to join us on this collective journey of unveiling our times and our past, and dreaming new futures, in a world marred by colonialism.

Happy Birthday Mummy. For the longest, I dreamt of celebrating your 60th differently, with you and your heartwarming smile still here. You never celebrated yourself, but there was no way I was going to let you get away without tying your gele for this one. Even though we had to do the past 4 birthdays without you, it hasn’t gotten any easier and I doubt it ever will. I made sure to always give you flowers, but it’s nothing compared to this overflow that I can’t give you. I’m so blessed to have been loved by you and to have experienced your friendship too. Thank you for teaching me to dream so vividly and to chase it just as fervently. Thank you for memorializing your love for me in every form and for loudly cheering me on. You knew I was one of your biggest fans and as hard as the past few years have been, I have never been prouder to be your daughter. And I will celebrate you for a lifetime ♥️🫂.

My darling maami, may the Almighty Allah grant you aljannah firdaus. Amin 🙏🏾 by @maya_raji

Explored the historic Kofar Wombai tannery in Kano City. It’s been in use for over a century and one of the few traditional tanneries still operational. Speaking of Nigerians love for leather, ponmo (smoked cow skin) is also a delicacy! Talk about full circle 😂

Ever curious about where leather comes from?

Huge thanks to @maelokko for sharing her inspiring thoughts on African material culture, labor systems, and “new roles for architects.” 🙌🏾

I really enjoyed learning about the Benin Bronzes from Dr. Sarah Clunis @harvardpeabodycollections . My deepest appreciation goes to the editors @andrea_sandell @sliceofpiazza @iz.pdf and all the other contributors for crafting this issue. I absorbed a lot from this experience and look forward to seeing how these ideas translate into practice. So happy to see it in print!

“Dinner is a light meal of stewed meat in obè ata, fried sweet plantains, braised greens, and steamed rice. The scent leaf I noted in the garden has been julienned, garnishing the dishes. It is my first time back in my parents’ home in twenty years. On the plate before me, all of the complexities of a life lived in exile seem intermingled with the simplicity of home.”

Yewande Komolafe, My Everyday Lagos

My close friends know how much I love to talk about food. But my love for food, especially Nigerian food, has helped me deal with homesickness. It was the easiest portal for me to remember how my childhood house looked like in quick flashes — grating okra in my mother’s orange kitchen with terrazzo floors as she heated up the palm oil to make her classic Ila Asepo [okra cooked with assorted meats and vegetables]. As a college student cooking some of those meals was not the most cost/ time efficient so I came up with remixes that transported me back to moments at the market, the kitchen, dining table and all the moments inbetween. And even after my mother passed away, eating, cooking and growing food is still an outpouring of love that I can enjoy alone but also share with others. There is a level of care and intention that goes into making a meal and fixing someone a plate but it goes beyond the ingredients, sometimes it is an invitation for others to step into your home with you.

Yewande’s cookbook explores the archives on our plates and she invites readers to immerse themselves and embrace the many tastes of home, in her “everyday Lagos” taken in Brooklyn by @maya_raji
