⛵️Did you know this boat is made specifically for people with disabilities?

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding adaptive maritime recreation for individuals with physical disabilities and serious illnesses is bringing an almost 60-foot catamaran to the Lowcountry.

The organization, Wings on Water, held a sail where about a dozen participants boarded the catamaran on Thursday on a mission to feel the breeze and listen to the waves for what many thought wouldn’t be possible for a disabled person.

The catamaran, also known as “The Impossible Dream,” is designed from the keel up to be 100% barrier-free, giving disabled people the opportunity to also enjoy sailing. The boat is 58 feet exactly and 27 feet across the beam. taken in Charleston, South Carolina by @mayaa_brown

Excited to announce I'm a finalist for three RTDNAC Awards including Community Impact, General News and TV News Multimedia Journalist of the Year!

I'm so honored to be a finalist for these awards, especially the Community Impact award. When I moved to Charleston, I made it a mission to learn more about the Gullah Geechee community and all their accomplishments and ongoing struggles. One of the biggest struggles? Fighting gentrification. I worked on three pieces of different settlement communities in the area who are pushing back against gentrification and preserving their culture and history everyday, including the modern-day push for reparations. It's a fight I've been honored to witness and share. I'm especially so thankful to the people who shared their stories with me and trusted me with their mission.

I'm also so grateful for being a finalist for Multimedia Journalist of the Year in the Carolinas, especially in my first official year as a MMJ in local news! In my first year, I've honed in on community stories, spoke to victims and families who have lost loved ones and held those in power in accountable. No day is like the other and I'm so appreciative for the way Charleston welcomed me and took me in.

So thankful to be a part of Live 5 News and I can't wait to find out the winners in November! by @mayaa_brown

🪦Did you know there are two African American cemeteries on the 580-acre wildlife refuge of the Charleston Museum’s Dill Sanctuary?

One of those historic cemeteries is being cleaned up this weekend but there’s a bigger mission behind clearing the weeds.

The cleanup also has a mission to spread awareness of the ongoing efforts to preserve the site and honor two late advocates who dedicated many years to preservation, Thomas Johnson and Eugene Frazier Sr.

Both Johnson and Frazier led the charge on locating the owner of what was once an overgrown cemetery and organized the cleanup, documentation and preservation of the site. taken in James Island by @mayaa_brown

⛪️ Today, I learned this church still has hiding spaces from when they used to provide a site of refuge for runaway slaves and African Americans facing Jim Crow laws. 138 years later they’re being honored with a historical marker.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church is set to unveil a historical marker and monument sign to honor the congregation and its history.

Constructed in 1895, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church is one of the oldest surviving Black Baptist church buildings in Charleston and one of the oldest sacred spaces on the Upper Peninsula. This also marks the first African American church in the North Central area to be awarded a historical marker.

Shandtel Heyward is the resident historian at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and said this upcoming weekend is about honoring their past, celebrating their present, and building their future.

“This is more than just a church,” Heyward said. “It’s family. It’s dynamics. And so right now, the future is preserving that area, preserving the St. Paul experience and preserving the building and the body of this church.” taken in Charleston, South Carolina by @mayaa_brown

South Carolina and Wyoming are the only two states to not have enacted statewide hate crimes laws, so now local municipalities are leading the charge.

The Town of Hollywood is moving forward with a potential hate crime deterrence ordinance.

⚠️ Residents off Mapleridge Drive have been raising the alarm on large potholes and temporary fixes on the streets of Dew Avenue, Linnus Street and Paul Street, so I reached out earlier this week.

Two days later, the holes were filled with asphalt and some streets saw some fixes. But many residents aren’t happy with the temporary fix. taken in Goose Creek, South Carolina by @mayaa_brown
