We’re excited to co-teach a new class this fall, hosted by @secret_riso_club. Songwriting, Ritual, and Creative Practice is a 4-week generative songwriting workshop led by Maya Keren and Camila Ortiz. The course is grounded in ritual as a gateway to creativity; we offer practical exercises and prompts that build intuition and clarify your voice within a supportive, collaborative setting. Each songwriter will write and workshop 4 song seeds and finish the class with at least one completed song. Sundays 3-5pm (Oct 11, 18, 25, Nov 1) at Secret Riso, $200-300 sliding scale. Slow Burn is officially out in the world!!!

According to my mom, in the Chinese zodiac, every 12 years of your life is either really good or really bad. I try to think of it as… full of growth one way or another. I wrote the bulk of this album right after turning 24, this infamous year. I was moving through a period of grief, and then was hit by the apartment fire some of you may know really affected me and my friend Claire. I feel that I came of age (whatever that means) in a real way that year, and this album became a friend, a source of solace, and a way of working shit out during that time. As it goes, I also feel like somehow things clicked in as a songwriter and a producer in a way they hadn’t before. These songs feel like the truest representation so far of what I love and what I find beautiful.

I hope that the songs land true, and that they can provide a measure of feeling known, of cracking open the heart, of whomever may listen.

I am grateful to so many loved ones, friends, and collaborators, without whom this album could not have seen the light of day. Thank you to Claire and Cami, my album co-parents. (Shoutout to @_otracami_ who released her album Runoff today!) Thank you to Eden, Isa, Lesley, Maya, Jeff, Akiva, and Vic for being early listeners and shaping the album in ways big and small.

Thank you to @evesoflov for co-mixing/mastering, and @mariquitx and @cuircuircuircuircuir for their stunning contributions to the album art.

We’ll be celebrating the release tonight in Philly @34.arts and with a listening/release party March 25 at @dearfriendbooks .

Anyways… happy birthday to my mom, happy Aries szn, and happy spring! Thank you for listening!
