Just a few of my thoughts on this Holocaust Remembrance Day💭
(And I really mean A FEW because I have so many more)

I find myself in a unique position. One half African American, descendent of Africans ripped from their native land(s) - origins of which I still don’t even know. One half Jewish American, descendent of Holocaust survivors and victims, Eastern European Jews, also persecuted for their very nature.

I am proud to be Jewish. I am proud to be Black. My very life would not exist if it hadn’t been for the strength, resilience, and one could argue, “good” fortune of my ancestors, all collaborating together to allow my existence today.

But that’s not all that allowed my life to exist. The compassion, the courage, and the righteous actions of others MUST be noted. When my grandfather, orphaned by hate and intolerance, was helped by a family of catholic farmers who cared for him when no one else could or would, their courage to do what’s right saved his life.

With all the violence and intolerance demonstrated by humans through our history, we say “never forget”, yet it seems we always do, time and time again.

If you’re still here with me, I want to say that I’m choosing to “never forget” my humanity. I will never forget the way my ancestors were treated and mistreated, persecuted, and murdered, for reasons that actually don’t even matter because: you DON’T treat collective groups of human beings that way, no matter what…And as I remember the wrongs done to my people, I am STILL committed to seeing the humanity in “others”. (What does “other” even mean when referring to a fellow human being?)

On this day, and every day, I hope for peace, for more people to see the humanity in one another, and for us to collectively do a better job at caring for one another.

Ceasefire NOW☮️

Clean water, food & medical care are basic human rights☮️
Never Again, for Anyone☮️

✨What does wellness look like to you?

For me, it looks like:

• Eating delicious, vibrant, and flavorful meals that nourish me and don’t leave me feeling fatigued or over-stuffed. And drinking enough water!

• Moving my body daily - stretching, riding my bike, going for a walk, taking a class - anything, even if it’s just for 15 minutes

• Spending time in nature and sunlight, breathing in some fresh air

• Designating time in my day for ME - reading, planning, meditating, watching a show, taking a nap

• Taking care of my health, which sometimes looks like scheduling my medical appointments timely and following through with attending them

Being well is a lifestyle and it involves life-long habits.
And it isn’t linear!

All we can do every day is try our best. I hope this inspires you to take care of yourself today🦋

Currently reading “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho (I know, I’m late) and…this book is magical✨

Wanted to share a few quotes that are speaking to my OT soul🪞

✨One of my favorite things about OT is the potential in our practices.

🌤️Although some outcomes noted in the OTPF-4 are more widely used than others, there are so many emerging areas of OT practice where our potential to be useful are just beginning to be discovered, and RE-discovered.

🌤️It never ceases to amaze me that so many brilliant ideas were considered already over the course of occupational therapy’s development, but collectively as a field, we seem to have forgotten some of our foundational roots.

🌤️That being said, there are so many wonderful professionals and students I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with, who are absolutely committed to rediscovering and sharing our full potential as occupational therapists! I am so grateful to share this profession with you all ❣️

Just livin the dream ✨

I know it’s still early, and I’m only 2 months into my professional career (😂), but I’m still so grateful for the stars that aligned and brought me to occupational therapy🫶🏽

As time passes, I’m sure I’ll have a more well-rounded opinion about my job. But helping people to help themselves is one of the most rewarding things, and I’m beyond grateful for that ❣️

⭐️ In the rehab environment, a big portion of our job includes cheering our clients on along their healing journeys. And we all know, each person needs a different type of encouragement!

⭐️ As the professionals in this therapeutic relationship, it is our duty to utilize our skilled training to empower our clients to be active participants in their care.

I've said just about all the things in slide 5 in my less than 2 month experience working in SNF rehab!
