Yesterday we said goodbye to the goodest girl in the whole wide world. My first dog, the dog I grew up with, and my bestie girl. At 19 years old, she was as full of love as ever, but her little body couldn’t keep fighting. Watching her suffer was unbearable, and we ultimately decided that it was cruel to allow it to continue. Not being able to do anything to soothe her or ease her pain was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. Thank god we made the decision to assist her in her passing, because she went to sleep in my mom’s arms before the doctor even came in the room, so she never even knew what was happening. All she knew was that her people loved her and that she was tired. We were able to give her a dignified death and we were lucky enough to have the gift of saying goodbye in our time. I’m so thankful to have had 17 beautiful years with her. Now that our constant and our glue is gone, we will have to learn a new way to be, but that is okay.
