Hi! I usually only post once a week, but I feel like an introduction is long overdue, so here's a meet the bookstagrammer post!

✨My name is Maylisa or May for short, I'm 27 years old, and I live in florida (for now šŸ˜‰)

✨I created this account so I can talk about books with other book lovers, as well as an attempt to keep my camera from collecting dust

✨I read mostly fiction but I'm trying to change that

✨Digital book reading is very difficult for me, I need physical copies even with audiobooks.

✨Japan is the place I want to visit the most. (Tokyo and Takayama to be exact)

✨I'm a big horror/thriller movie fan
My favorite movies are Eve's Bayou and Scream but slice of life films that make big statements about life really hit me the hardest.

✨I have quite a few turtle figurines that are scattered around my apartment

✨Summer is my least favorite time of year, I hate sweating and I have a habit of dressing like I don't live in Florida. šŸ˜…

✨A good playlist, podcasts and vlogs on YouTube get me through the work day

That's all I can think of, so thank you for reading this far! ā˜ŗļø Tell me something about yourself in the comments! šŸ’Œ

For the Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran's Women-Led Uprising by Fatemeh Jamalpour and Nilo Tabrizy

ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… ā˜…Ā ā˜…

Told through corresponding letters between two Iranian journalists, this novel follows the uprising against the regime in Iran after the police of the ISlamic Republic murdered Masha Jîna Amini in 2022. Fatemeh Jamalpour, who is living in Iran and Nilo Tabrizy, living in New York discuss their lives as Iranians and all of the people and rights lost due to a government's overbearing greed for power over its people.

I don't even know where to begin with my thoughts on this novel.Ā  Of course, there is a lot of discussion of the murder and physical abuse from the Islamic Republic, as well as learning how people were punished for doing simple things such as:Ā LIST THEMĀ and even for mourning their murdered loved ones. You also learn about how people come together to protect the country and community that means so much to them. Whether they're physically there or on the other side of the globe, their heart resides in Iran and they will do all that they can to have their homeland be the place they can live freely, safely and happily in.Ā Ā

For the Sun After Long Nights definitely provided more details on events thatĀ I only knew a fraction of, while also providing personal/cultural stories from the authors,Ā which I loved. It's heartbreaking how many people have lost their lives overĀ nothing, essentially. There are so many quotes that I highlighted throughoutĀ my read but I will list a few of them here:

"I took the thread that she handed me, matched it up to the historical fabric, and stitched it together to form an understanding of our family." p81

"The future is unclear. But we are optimistic about these young girls whose only weapon is their hair.Ā  They are ready to sacrifice their lives for a free future.Ā  We're all ready to pay the price of freedom." p191

"My Instagram was flooded with my American classmates' eye-catching photos of cooked Thanksgiving turkeys alongside low-quality footage of bloody bodies of Iranian victims. It was that moment when I realized I was living in a parallel world." p163 by @maychecksout

Outdrawn by Deanna Grey

Summary: Previously college classmates, Sage and Noah are two cartoonists in their late twenties working at a comic company where they have to work together, despite being rivals.Ā Ā

brook's thoughts šŸ”® ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… I thought the rivals to lovers was written perfectly. It was not over the top. Everyone was respectful toward one another while having a little ā€œfriendlyā€ competition. I didn’t mind the miscommunication because in this instance it worked!Ā

Although the smut scenes felt abrupt, the romance was executed well and their relationship felt natural.Ā

I loved how we were able to see the family of both characters and how differently yet the same they acted towards Sage and Noah. Like being an artist full time was not ā€œa real jobā€ even though they were doing well for themselves. Ugh the families pmo in their own way.Ā

Anyway 5/5 āļøĀ Would recommend for someone who wants a mature artsy- rivals to lovers romance novel with a slight miscommunication trope.Ā

may's thoughtsšŸŽā˜… ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… This was such a fun read! I loved that we got a bisexual + lesbian woman pairing. I feel like that’s not a pairing we see often, so that was very refreshing.

The romance was so cute! The rivals-to-lovers was so good, with the way their inner and outward thoughts often clashed. Like, can y’all just kiss already, omg!Ā

Although this is a romance novel, I loved how much we focused on their jobs as artists, and we got a good look into their relationships with their families and how those affected their self-worth and actions.Ā

Now, I love spicy food, but I’m not a spice fan when it comes to books, and I feel like the tone switched so fast during the spicy scenes. The dialogue and everything felt so different, but it was still a fun read overall!

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

maychecksout ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… | @vidademija ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… ½

ā€œIs it a sin against God to be poor?ā€

ā€œGrief hit like that. Something would remind us of the past, of home, of a person, and then we would remember that it was all gone.ā€

šŸŒ€ So I’m not a huge sci-fi reader, but I enjoyed reading both Kindred and Wild Seed by Octavia Butler, and since I had heard nothing but great things about Parable of the Sower, I added it to my TBR immediately. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this as I expected to.Ā  I was intrigued for the first hundred or so pages, but I could not immerse myself in the world or find the interest I yearned for in the characters, as I feel like I should have. Ā

⭐ I loved the discussions on classism, God/religion, and the ā€œfeelersā€. And I know I said I couldn’t fully immerse myself in the world; I did find a lot of what was happening interesting! I might have to re-read this one next year or something…we’ll see. by @maychecksout

A week with Days at the Torunka Café by Satoshi Yagisawa

ā˜… ā˜… ā˜…

Tucked away on a narrow side street in Tokyo, the Torunka Café is a place of comfort for its regulars and tourists alike. In this novel, we get a deeper look into the everyday lives of three of these patrons and what’s weighing on their hearts.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this nearly as much as I loved the Morisaki Bookshop duology. We focused on 3 characters, and each section felt completely different to me, even with the café being the common ground; the thread didn’t feel strong enough for me. Ranking the sections is easy: 1 āž”ļø BRICK WALL āž”ļø 3 āž”ļø 2. Chinatzu and Shizuku (the characters from part one) are so interesting, and their backstory was so strong that I feel like the other stories that followed just did not stand a chance. Another thing is that I did not yearn to find this coffee shop in the way I did for the bookshop. I just didn’t get a real feel of the café at all. Regardless of that, I *would* be interested to see if this becomes a duology as well. Since I did enjoy More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop more than the first, I’ll still keep a lookout! by @maychecksout

The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui

A memoir about a Vietnamese family living through the Vietnam War in the 70’s, in addition to their lives post-war as they immigrate to North America. Ā

Through beautiful illustrations, we see how the Bui family from South Vietnam is affected by the war and how they decide to do whatever it takes to keep their family safe while working toward a better future for themselves.Ā  This was such an engaging and enlightening read.Ā  Thi Bui provided an important pov during the war that I hadn’t really heard from before.Ā  Reading this felt like a history lesson mixed in with a personal story about intergenerational trauma, immigration, cultural identity, and parenthood - with a strong focus on motherhood.Ā  The illustrations, with the simple watercolor throughout the novel, were so wonderful to look at! Even my coworker asked to borrow my copy after seeing them.

Sisters in Yellow by Mieko Kawakami

ā˜… ā˜… ā˜… ā˜…

Sisters in Yellow follows the memories of Hana, a woman now in her 40s, during the early stages of COVID-19. Ā Her memories take us back to the 1Sisters in Yellow by Mieko Kawakami990s in Tokyo as she navigates her teen years and early twenties through poverty, crime, loneliness, found family, and her deep desire to have a future better than her past. Ā

So happy to have finally read this! It had been on my list since the original release, and the wait had been killing me; I couldn’t preorder it fast enough, actually. Okay, review time now!!

I love the way Kawakami writes her characters. Ā They all feel so real, and while not always relatable, I can always feel their emotions through the dialogue and the sadness that usually emanates from them. Ā The women characters, especially. Ā I felt like Hana and her friend’s wins were my wins and their losses were mine too. Ā I’m glad each character felt like their own person, too. They were all in the same underworld business, but they didn’t feel too cartoonish or too similar to one another. Ā

Compared to her other works that are more character-based, this one was more story-focused, which gave it a different feel, but her writing and character-building felt just like home. Ā I do feel like things were dragged out a bit at times, but I never wanted to stop reading; I just felt like the pacing was uneven. Ā It may not be my favorite by Mieko Kawakami, but it is a book I’ll think about often, just like all of her other works I adore.

Other things I loved:

 superstition

 dream interpretation

Lemon! I wanted to experience the bar so bad!

 yakuza history

• yellow is also my favorite color so it was fun to gather some yellow items i had laying around for the third photo! by @maychecksout
