🌱 World Seagrass Day 🌱

🌿 Anyone that knows me knows I’ve been obsessed with seagrass for YEARS. Seagrass meadows are biodiversity hotspots, providing shelter for marine species and feeding grounds for marine mammals like dugongs and manatees. They sequester carbon, locking it away in their sediment - also known as ‘blue carbon’ and play a key role in the fight against climate change. However, seagrass meadows are disappearing at an alarming rate due to human activity and pollution.

🌿 Last year, the @seawilding team, along with over 40 volunteers across three months harvested, processed and transplanted over 8,000 seagrass shoots from a donor meadow in Loch Craignish to a restoration area measuring approximately 0.12 of an acre*! @lookfor.hope and I spent a weekend in June.

🌿We had a few gorgeous sun-filled days volunteering, made even better by the warmth and friendliness of the SeaWilding team and all the other volunteers from near and far. Reflecting on my time volunteering, it’s clear that these hands-on volunteer days are about so much more than planting seagrass—though that’s incredibly important—but about building connections: connections with the local community, with fellow ocean lovers, and with the very environment we’re striving to protect.

I’m so stoked to be joining them again this summer and will definitely be dusting off my GoPro to get some underwater shots as I help the team harvest seagrass seeds 🌊
