Black and White (Ilford XP2) vs. Color (Portra 400) 🎞️

On our road trip to the North Cape, we spent countless hours on ferries - so common in Scandinavia that they feel like part of the landscape. With time to spare, I decided to experiment.

First, I shot a roll of black-and-white film, capturing the ferry’s quiet moments: passengers at the rail, the horizon in the distance, light shifting across the deck. Then I switched to color film and photographed similar scenes.

The difference is super interesting. Black and white emphasized contrast and mood; color revealed warmth and detail. Both rolls were taken with the Olympus OM2, yet they told completely different stories.

My first trip to China felt a little overwhelming, mostly because of the scale of everything.

Guangzhou and Macao are only about an hour apart, but they feel very different. Guangzhou is full of huge modern towers and wide city views, with streets that felt surprisingly quiet, while Macao is much more compact, with buildings packed closely together, narrow streets, and crowds of tourists.

Walking around with my camera, I kept looking up.

Noon in a Bangkok alley, before the rain.

Turning off the main road always brings quiet moments. Between the empty alleys and harsh noon light, you run into something new every time. Parked cars, flowers, shards, and even a snake. Can you spot it?

Another old camera I picked up here in Thailand: the Minolta AF-S Quartz

Mine was in pretty rough condition when I found it, but after some cleaning it came back to life. Or let’s say mostly because the flash is unfortunately dead, so I couldn’t test it, and the battery door is broken too (which is somehow quiet often a problem).

The AF-S was released in 1984 and is a pretty straightforward 35mm autofocus point-and-shoot. It comes with a fixed 35mm f/2.8 Minolta lens, automatic exposure and manual ISO selection from 25–1000.

What I like about cameras like this is that they were never particularly fancy. They were simply made to be easy to carry around (the camera is quiet light) and take photos with and more than 40 years later, this one is still doing exactly that.

These are 10 shots from the first 2–3 rolls. And honestly, I’m quite surprised by what this little camera can still produce.

Definitely one I’ll keep testing 🎞️

This abandoned resort was one of the most creepiest and interesting places I’ve ever been.

It felt as if everyone had left in a rush and simply never came back.

Beautiful paintings were still hanging on the walls. Old records showed who had checked in during the final days and who had worked there. Papers were scattered everywhere. Unpaid bills, staff documents, booking records, even copies of passports. It was like walking through a place where time had suddenly stopped.

With every step, the wooden floors creaked beneath our feet. Parts of the ceilings had collapsed, rooms were slowly being taken over by nature, and the wind moved softly through broken windows.

The strangest part was how much had been left behind. Not just furniture, but pieces of people’s lives and the everyday details of a once-busy resort.

📷 Olympus ESPIO 200 (thanks to @john_hasselblad_hassypb I was able to shoot with this little point and shoot. Thank you 🥹🙏 and as it was my first time, so here we are in 1994 🤣)

A roll from China, shot during typhoon season. Grey skies, rainy days, city lights and a lot of blue.

I shot this with a Safelight 500T roll which is a tungsten-balanced ISO 500 film. Tungsten films are designed for artificial light rather than daylight, which makes them especially interesting once the sun starts to disappear. Under cooler daylight conditions they tend to create stronger blue and cyan tones, while warm artificial lights stay beautifully rich.

For this roll, the cloudy skies and blue-hour atmosphere during typhoon season worked surprisingly well with the character of the film. Especially next to the orange lanterns and illuminated skyline, the colors almost feel like two completely different worlds. Since I shot 500T for the second or third time, I have to say that the contrast is probably what I really like the most about it.

Another little experiment which I didn’t wish for 😅 this roll also went through an airport scanner before being shot. I was expecting at least some additional fogging or visible damage, but the negatives came back looking fine for me.

Not the easiest weather for photographing China but maybe exactly the right weather for 500T 🎞️
