Maynooth University welcomed Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD to officially open Teach Uí Bhuachalla Student Accommodation, its new purpose-built student housing in the heart of Maynooth town.

Located on Leinster Street, the 4,000m² complex spans four floors and provides 116 self-contained, en-suite student rooms, supported by communal kitchens designed for social cooking and dining.

This state-of-the-art development is the first project to be delivered under the Government’s Short-Term Activation Programme to help with the supply of student accommodation.

The building includes seven accessible rooms, is heated by heat pumps and has a BER cert rating of A2. It brings the total number of student beds available at Maynooth University to 1,262 from 1,146.

Designed by Demesne Architects and delivered by Vision Contracting, the project strengthens the connection between the University and the wider community. It is situated in the middle of Maynooth town on the historic site of the original Buckley House — a detached, three-bay, two-storey residence dating back to the early 1800s.

Minister James Lawless, who will officially open the new housing, said: “This is a proud day for our sector. The delivery of Teach Uí Bhuachalla is not just a milestone for Maynooth University, it marks a significant step forward in how we deliver student housing across Ireland.

He rests his clasped hands on top of a dark, curved, horn-like sculpture. The sculpture is mounted on a small black rectangular base with a gold plaque. The inscription on the plaque reads "Maths Week Ireland Award for Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics David Malone 2026." He is wearing a white T-shirt with a faint red geometric pattern on the chest. The setting is indoors, with two large, dark, paned windows in the background, flanking the man. The lighting is focused on his face and the sculpture, creating a subtle rim light on his hair. by @maynoothuni

Due to planned industrial action, all teaching activities at Maynooth University will be cancelled on Wednesday 14 October.

This includes lectures, tutorials, laboratories, and practical work. For students on placement, where there is industrial action, you should not attend (Nursing, Education, public sector). However, if it is business as normal, then you should attend as normal.

Unless advised otherwise by your module lecturer, submission deadlines will remain unchanged. If you have any concerns, please contact your module lecturer, School or Department.

Our priority is to maintain student services and normal University operations as far as possible, however it is expected that there will be reduced services and restricted access to some buildings. Pickets are expected at entrances to the University, but these will not prevent students from accessing the campus.

Please continue to check your University email and module announcements for updates. An announcement graphic with a dark blue overlay showing a faint aerial view of a university campus, featuring people walking on pathways between modern buildings and trees.

"Fictions, Frictions, Evictions" is a collaborative, interdisciplinary project exploring the complex realities of housing, displacement, and the social fabric of contemporary Ireland.

Through research, art, and public dialogue, this initiative brings together diverse voices to unpack the systemic challenges of the housing crisis and imagine alternative futures.

Funded by the European Research Council, over the past 4 years, the Data Stories project at Maynooth University has investigated the stories, politics and power embedded in housing and planning data, exposing how housing and planning data are generated, circulated, governed and used.

The exhibition officially opens on Friday, 16th of October at 6pm at The Bank, 85 James Street, Dublin 8, D08 C2PR. Daily exhibition opening times: 11 am - 5.30 pm, and runs until Saturday 24th of October.

The background features a weather-beaten, corrugated metal shutter with peeling blue paint on the left and faded white and grey panels to the right, marked with black graffiti tags.

At the bottom left, white text reads: "Understanding Ireland’s housing emergency through data stories, public knowledge, art & activism."

At the bottom right, orange text displays "16-24 OCT" alongside white text reading "The Bank at The Digital Hub, Dublin 8."

The bottom black footer features several logos, including "data stories," "Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute," the European Union flag, and the "European Research Council" (erc) logo. by @maynoothuni

Maynooth University’s Department of Education has marked 100 years of teacher education at Maynooth, bringing together generations of graduates, current and former colleagues, students and partners.
The history dates to 1926, when the first Higher Diploma in Education began at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth (SPCM) with six students.

Forty years later, in 1966, the Higher Diploma opened to lay students, including women. Among them was Mary O’Rourke, who would later serve as Minister for Education. Other graduates of the Department who went on to hold ministerial roles in education include Mary Hanafin, Joe McHugh and Mary Mitchell O’Connor. The same year saw the announcement of free second-level education in Ireland, beginning a period of major change in Irish education.

Since 1966, more than 10,000 graduates have completed initial teacher education programmes at Maynooth. Over that time, the Department’s work has expanded into undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education, educational leadership, professional learning and research, alongside its work with schools and the wider education system.

“100 years is a long time to keep believing that teaching is worth doing properly. That’s what this milestone represents to me. Generations of people at Maynooth who quietly decided, year after year, that Irish teacher education was worth reforming, worth expanding and worth getting right.,” said Dr Majella Dempsey, Head of the Department of Education.
