“Is There a Hero Among Us?” A powerful question that reminds us that true heroism is not always found in grand gestures, but in the everyday acts of kindness, sacrifice, service and love that strengthen our communities.

As St. James celebrates Heritage Week 2026 under the theme “One Love… One Family… One Heritage,” @mayorofmontegobay @richardvernon.cllr, joined worshippers at @tcmija for the Heritage Week Thanksgiving Church Service.

Through her inspiring message, Pastor Mary Wildish challenged everyone to reflect on the hero within themselves and the difference they can make in the lives of others.

Our heritage was built on the courage and sacrifices of those who came before us. Today, we honour that legacy not only by remembering our heroes, but by becoming the kind of citizens who will inspire future generations.

The question is no longer simply, “Is there a hero among us?” but rather, “What are we doing to become that hero for someone else?”

From the classroom to the Council Chamber, the journey of leadership begins with opportunity.

Following his recent school tour across St. James, where he encouraged students to dream bigger, believe in their potential and embrace leadership, Mayor Richard Vernon continues to champion opportunities that empower the next generation.

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Deputy Mayor @dwightdebocrawfordjm represented @mayorofmontegobay @richardvernon.cllr at the Junior Mayor Competition Orientation, reinforcing the importance of giving young people a voice in shaping the future of their communities.

For Mayor Vernon, investing in youth leadership is more than offering words of encouragement. It is about creating meaningful opportunities for students to develop confidence, discover their abilities, understand civic responsibility and recognise that their voices matter.

The future of Montego Bay is not something we must simply wait for. It is something we must prepare our young people to build.

Today’s students are tomorrow’s decision makers, community builders and national leaders. When we invest in their potential today, we strengthen the future of our city and our nation.

Homelessness is not simply about the absence of a roof over one’s head. It is about lives affected by hardship, unforeseen circumstances and challenges that require compassion, understanding and meaningful action.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, @mayorofmontegobay @richardvernon.cllr, served as Patron of the World Homeless Day observance held in Sam Sharpe Square.

In his address, Mayor Vernon called for greater public awareness and understanding of the circumstances that lead to homelessness, while reaffirming the @stjamesmunicipalcorporation’s commitment to supporting the city’s most vulnerable citizens.

Central to this commitment is the planned establishment of a Transition Centre, which will provide temporary accommodation, care and support for persons experiencing homelessness and mental health challenges.

Mayor Vernon continues to champion the belief that the progress of a city must be measured not only by its development, but also by how it treats those who need help the most.

Building a better Montego Bay means building a city where compassion meets action and no one is forgotten.

Taking Charge of Our Transportation System. Building a More Efficient Montego Bay.

After more than 20 years under lease, the Montego Bay Transportation Centre is set to return to the direct management of its owner, the @stjamesmunicipalcorporation.

@mayorofmontegobay @richardvernon.cllr, has taken the decision to reclaim management of the facility as part of a broader mission to bring greater order, efficiency, and structure to the transportation system serving Montego Bay and surrounding parishes.

The Mayor, accompanied by members of the St. James Municipal Corporation and the @jamaicaconstabularyforce (JCF), recently conducted a walkthrough of the facility to assess its condition and identify areas for improvement.

Planned capital investment will focus on modernizing the facility, improving its operations, and creating a safer, more organized environment for commuters and transport operators.

As part of this transformation, both the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Transport Authority will be provided with dedicated spaces within the centre, strengthening coordination, enforcement, and the management of public transportation.

Efficient transportation is more than moving people from one place to another. It is a driver of economic growth. When people can move safely and efficiently, businesses benefit, productivity increases, and communities thrive.

This initiative is about more than reclaiming a facility. It is about taking responsibility for a critical part of the city's infrastructure and laying the foundation for a more connected, productive, and prosperous Montego Bay.

A better organized city is a stronger city.
