Mayor Sarno Visits with Students from Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno visited students at Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School as part of their career day where parents and special guests visited to talk about their jobs and careers. Mayor Sarno shared his background with students and what it’s like serving as Mayor for the City of Springfield.
Mayor Sarno stated, “what a great group of students at our Mary Dryden School. Some were dressed up as what they want to be when they grow up and we had a great time talking about our city and how important education and staying in school is to achieve their dreams. I often remind them that I once sat right where they sit when I was a Springfield public schools’ student back at White Street Elementary School. I do this because it is important to remember, and for our students to realize, they are our future leaders. The future leaders of our city, our state, our country, and future world leaders are sitting in our Springfield classrooms right now, learning and growing and coming together to solve problems. I was honored to be part of their career day and truly appreciate the very thoughtful questions from the students. I am also very proud of our teachers and school staff for their dedication to teaching our future leaders. Thank you to Principal Theresa Carrie and Counselor Lisa Jones for welcoming and inviting me today. Keep up the excellent work!” by @mayorsarno

This new fast casual restaurant, located where the former Albano’s Market and Bob Weiner Tire used to stand, will create around 35 to 40 jobs and offer their famous soups, sandwiches and salads, while complementing our South End amenities and being conducive to the neighborhood. Along with the abutting Starbucks and Burger King, and the new 40 home-ownership townhouse development project that we announced yesterday, our South End neighborhood is alive and thriving.” by @mayorsarno

Mayor Sarno and Officials Join with Home City Development for Groundbreaking Ceremony for Gemini Townhomes
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Housing Director Gerry McCafferty and city officials joined with Home City Development for a special groundbreaking ceremony for the Gemini Townhomes project in the South End neighborhood.

Mayor Sarno states, “In 2021, CDO Tim Sheehan and I put the Gemini site out for an RFP for potential developers to come back to us with an innovative economic and housing development plan that would provide a much-needed housing unit while also being conducive to our South End neighborhood. I am pleased to announce that Home City Development has once again put forth a very positive, feasible and sustainable development plan. I also want to thank the Healey-Driscoll Administration, especially Crystal Kournegay, Executive Director for MassHousing, for their continued belief and investment in this important anchor project in our neighborhood. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Chief Development Officer (CDO) Tim Sheehan and Springfield Redevelopment Authority (SRA) Executive Director Amanda Pham announced today that the Authority will purchase of the approximately 17 acre, Vibra Hospital campus on State Street for $1.00 and associated conveyance fees. City Council Vice President Melvin Edwards, State Senator Jacob Oliveira, State Representative Bud Williams, SRA Board Member Fiore Grassetti and Chair Armando Feliciano, and Lamari Jackson from State Senator Adam Gomez's office were also in attendance.
The campus includes two land parcels with the addresses of 1400-1414 State Street. The assessed valuation for the two parcels is $6.4 million and the existing zoning is Residence C.
“This is truly a unique opportunity for the City to have direct control over such a large land area for future economic development and for us as a community to be able to guide the type of development that will occur on this campus in a way that truly benefits the City of Springfield and its residents via jobs, economic investment, environmental sustainability and creative land use strategies, while also being conducive with the neighborhood – much like what was done to secure the positive economic development future of the three properties at the corner of State Street and Main Street,” said Mayor Sarno. by @mayorsarno

The Thunderbirds have had an overall economic impact of $126 million in Springfield.

The economic spinoff effect to local businesses, restaurants and hotels has been outstanding. In addition, the T-Birds have been an incredible moral boost for our city, especially during the playoffs! I want to thank Nate Costa and his team, along with Paul Picknelly and our local ownership group for their continued belief and investment in our Springfield. Special thanks to Chris Kelley and the MGM Springfield team for their continued partnership supporting our T-Birds. During away games and especially during their Calder Cup playoff run, the MGM Plaza was alive and roaring as they showed our beloved T-Birds play on the big screen. So come on down and let's cheer on our T-Birds! As a proud and longtime season ticket owner, I'll see you Saturday evening as we kickoff the season.” by @mayorsarno
