ART + SOUNDBATH 💎many thanks to Laura Frank & Teddy Pietrzak and to all who came out for a sound~journey~ activation in the Edgar Heap of Birds Family Gallery in conjunction with my exhibition Geometries of Self. It was a very sweet evening. @lauraellenfrank @_some_quality_time_ #teddypietrzak
💎 Laura and Teddy are ceremonialists and initiated healers in the Shipibo-Konibo lineage of the Peruvian Amazon. They have both been dedicated patients, students and apprentices in this beautiful medicinal tradition for over a decade. Their sound bath is a unique experience of vibration which weaves together the doctoring chants of the Shipibo-Konibo, uplifting medicine songs, expansive mantra and sound healing to guide the passenger into a deep yet protected space for introspection, relaxation and healing🦋 by @maytveit

Second guest: Clarinetist Dr. Stephanie Zelnick. What a powerhouse! With a multifaceted career as a soloist, orchestral performer, and chamber musician appearing throughout North America, Asia, South America, & Europe.
Performing and teaching in venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, Northwestern University, Yale School of Music, and on Thursday in the Edgar Heap of Birds Family Gallery at KU.
~~~
My intention here was to insert sound-music-art into the everyday campus life of our building. ( & to be in conversation with my sculptures and prints that have a vibrating presence)  As an informal sound activation, it truly beckoned people into the space. Even Henry Troyer, IT Engineer, up at the bridge computer lab in the next building over from ours, came in and said: “the sound is drifting all the way up into Marvin Hall, and I couldn’t figure out if it was live or a recording :)”
~~~
With utter serendipity, Professor of Music Composition, Forrest Pierce, was walking by as we were setting up.
So we started this sesh on the couch, with a fledgling conversation about creative process, seeing sound, composing, and performer as spirit-conduit, in addition to knowing where to find the cheapest coffee on campus.
~~~
Stephanie performed works by Forrest Pierce, Anne Guzzo, Ingrid Stölzel, Kristen Denny Chambers, Vinicio Meza, Libby Larsen, and Thylia Yazzie.
Overlapping and expanding the circles.
Additional fun fact: I played clarinet in Junior High school, and won a few blue ribbons during those summer recital competitions. Remember flight of the bumblebee?
By chance I met Stephanie at the @vollandfoundation as we were both scheduled to talk/ perform at a patron event in the midst of my exhibition Journey.
Come to find out, these two east coasters, one a Jersey girl, the other from NY, have taught at the same institution for 20 years, and meet at a venue in rural Kansas. 🌾
Sweet dreams are made of this… #community
First guest was David Cateforis, KU Professor of American, Modern and Contemporary Art and author of Modern Art: A Global Survey from Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present ( New York: Oxford University Press 2023) These conversations are designed by me to talk about creative process. They’re not about me me me, but more about you you you.
~~~~~~
We talked about intuition, history, ways of seeing, writing, the descriptive language of seeing and analysis, time, place, context as framing devices, and our shared passion and purpose in teaching. We talked about John Berger’s book Ways of Seeing & my contemporary art history shero- Mary Anne Staniszewski~author of Seeing is Believing Creating the Culture of Art-that changed how I viewed everything when I was a RISD student back in the 1980’s. Artist & textile Professor Eric Conrad popped in, and come to find out he was a mathematician and an art major in undergrad. Herein lies the beauty of interdisciplinary dialogues and creative work. #discovery #dialogue #enlightenment #creativeprocess #research ~~~~~community. @arcd_ku @kuvisualart by @maytveit
