struggling new grad -> thriving vet

everyone starts somewhere. Yes, you made it through vet school 🎓🐶📚! but the road ahead is just as challenging, with a whole new set of obstacles.
Here’s the good news: it’s completely normal to make mistakes and feel rubbish about it in the beginning. And the other good news? The more reps you put in, the more you’ll grow into every part of the job.
So my message to you: be kind to yourself and to each other as you find your feet. I’m manifesting a supportive environment for every new grad out there 🙏🐾 and please know you are not alone in this.

I’m 31 and i’m a bit embarrassed to admit that..

1. I’m trying hard to grow on social media. Been posting since 2021 but know many others who ‘made it’ faster, makes me feel cringe to keep trying

2. I wished the vet job was better paid, a (very) small part of me questions if i could’ve done better in a different industry, so i can provide for my parents sooner

3. I care too much about what others think, which leads to people pleasing, but no one really thinks about that, cue ‘Spotlight effect’

4. I rely on my husband too much. I feel lonely I don’t have friends I meet weekly as they live so far away, so I rely on him a lot. I know it’s not healthy, yet I don’t make enough effort to meet people in my area offline.

5. I get insecure about my Malaysian accent, I think I code switch because of the belief that I would be taken more seriously speaking a neutral accent…

6. When something goes wrong, I take it out on myself. I beat myself up for not being good enough/ smart enough. I think that was my ‘defense mechanism’ so no one can hurt me, because I hurt myself first. I’m actively trying to unlearn that.

7. I tend to put others first, my needs last. Growing up, I was told that was the ‘right’ thing to do. I realised now, deprioritising your own health and rest can make you (really) ill. Take care of yourself, so you can take care of others.

8. I feel like I should have it all figured out, but I don’t. I weigh out the costs of having kids vs not, wondering if I can even afford them.. My biological clock ticks away while everyone else makes it look so easy online..

9. I’m afraid of being my authentic self. I don’t form strong opinions out of fear of rejection and upsetting others. I realised that suppressing who I am just creates more anxiety and hinders any meaningful connection with others.

Sharing this felt more vulnerable than expected.. but perhaps admitting is a first step towards self-acceptance, and being more real with you (+ me) here. If you’re also on your journey of figuring things out, welcome, so glad you’re here :)

Day in the life as a vet 🐾

Did I survive this 10 hour shift in my @alexandra_workwear Luma scrubs?

If you own a cockapoo here are 6 health issues that I’d budget for - coming from a vet who sees this almost every day 🥲

As a big advocate of preventative care & planning, things to bring up at your next health check:

1. Consider pet insurance

2. Ear cleaning regime - speak to your vet about products they’d recommend and learn how to clean regularly

I used to struggle with how fast paced vet work can be..
Of how much is expected from us to switch from being compassionate and empathic after a euthanasia to switched on and urgent for an emergency, to being professional and upbeat for a vaccine appointment..

Some days I still do struggle when things get too much.. but a useful thing that helps (me personally) is zooming out and realizing how much good impact you are doing, even if it’s just showing up for your team.

(Oh and speaking to your team always about how you’re feeling so you can troubleshoot things together 💛)
