Designing this Chicago home from the ground up was fun for many reasons, but today we’re going to focus on the abundance of natural light (yes, those are 10-foot windows). Unlike in New York where most homes touch (leaving a lot of windowless rooms), Chicago homes are typically freestanding on long, narrow lots, which means—you guessed it!—windows on all four sides of the house. Great for light, not so great for privacy. The solution: we used milk glass instead of clear on the sides, to let in light and maintain privacy.

Revisiting @danmazzarini’s entryway in honor of his @apartmenttherapy home tour! “We found our Greenwich Village apartment the best way possible: by accident,” he says. “Long story short, we walked into this building and asked if they had any rental units, and while they didn’t, they had one unit for sale … and the rest is history.”

Swipe to get a glimpse of the “before” and find the full feature at the link in our bio.

A work lounge we’d... well... love to work in.

The team pulled off a quick transformation for this client and the results speak for themselves.

3 reasons we love staging model apartments:

1) We know developers are trying to lease the building (duh), but we think of our role here more as helping potential renters envision what their life could look like in this new space. It’s exciting to consider the possibilities when you’re moving! And we hope everyone who enters these models feels inspired by at least one aspect of the design, whether it’s the layout, a game-changing furniture addition like placing an island where there wasn’t one, or even a fabric selection.

2) It’s a fun design challenge for the team. We design a lot of big homes, bigger offices and even bigger hospitality projects, so getting to think and design on a smaller scale is a refreshing change of pace.

3) It feels personal. We live in the city and in similar buildings, so it often times feels like we’re designing or ourselves or a friend as well as a fictional client.

We heard stainless steel kitchens are having a moments and we have thoughts...

Our Chicago clients—who years later, now probably have the trendiest kitchen on the block—have really fashion-forward, elevated taste. So we designed what we describe as a Tom Ford-inspired kitchen that really embraces refined industrialism. We paired Kenya Black granite counters and black-matte lower cabinets with stainless steel uppers and appliances. The kicker? We opted to use directional stainless steel, which means it’s more brushed than polished to get that statement look without the annoying fingerprint-wiping upkeep.

How the first day of fall finds us...

Each autumn we look back at this Belleayre project and it reminds us to book a weekend upstate.

Small space, big living. Concepting model apartments is always a fun design challenge. Normally when we’re designing a space for a client, it’s about listening and learning how they live, then creating a home that functions for them and helps them live their best life. With a model, we’re inventing the story and oftentimes, designing for a handful of fictional characters all at once. For this one-bedroom, we leaned into a black and white aesthetic with clean lines, drawing inspiration from the epic waterfront views. Swipe for the full tour →.

After all these years, we’re still chasing that back-to-school feeling. Our favorite place we brought that feeling to life was at @harvardclubnyc. We layered in history and heritage to give the club a sense of place, all with the ultimate goal of fostering conversations and connections between members new and old.
