🧿➿〰️launching 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮 Trance Mediterranea is an ongoing research within @mbeseries that presents thriving, ancestral, popular practices from the Mediterranean region, with an ear to the ethnological and anthropological. Popular dances and rituals are observed not as anachronistic vestiges, but as celebratory and current folk customs that continue to hold an influential role in the bonds of contemporary society. Trance Mediterranea aims to reflect on the idea of Mediterranean cultures as distinct yet united through shared aspects of communal trance inducing music making and rites celebrations. First issue will be released soon via @mbeseries 〰️〰️〰️ by @mbeseries
MBE012 Roc - Bengali Mayhem Stereo 🔗 cassette + insert card (link in bio) Roc Jimenez de Cisneros (1/2 EVOL) chopped and assembled, in a very Roc style, YouTube recordings of West Bengal soundsystem battles during a 3 years sampling archiving practice spanning between 2023 and 2026. "In rural and peri-urban contexts in West Bengal, large scale speaker arrays are deployed to generate sustained, high-intensity sound fields. These systems privilege volume and bass over clarity, producing an experience that is as tactile as it is auditory. Participants listen but also inhabit a sonic environment that vibrates through the body, blurring the boundary between hearing and feeling. Frequently audiences stand between opposing walls of sound while they are blasting popular songs interspersed with abrupt, arbitrary siren blasts, horror influenced tracks built around human or animal screams, narrated sound system checks that sweep across the full frequency spectrum and, perhaps most strikingly, sustained bass tones layered with chopped fragments of ambulance sirens, car alarms and the elaborate multi-tone horns of India's ubiquitos, brighlty decorated trucks." Relevant here is how West Bengal Soundcheck/Power Music reverts the sonic warfare into sonic temporary community building, un-sounds into a possible sonic perception, induced state of fear and anxiety into euphoria and joy, chaos into a state of ordinarity. It's #endcore at its core, 40 minutes soundtrack for our times. Play it loud at your next protest and rally! Jugaad is a Hindi word that refers to a way of working that relies on improvisation, adaptation, and making functional systems out of whatever materials, tools, and constraints are available. But jugaad (often translated as “frugal engineering”) is not just about makeshift repair or low-cost ingenuity; it is also a mentality that runs through transport, engineering, street economies, and event culture across large parts of South Asia. In that sense, these sound systems sit within a broader ecosystem of practical creativity, where formal infrastructure is often supplemented (or outright replaced) by locally assembled solutions that prioritize function, speed, and situational effectiveness over standardization. What emerges is a form of sound culture that is deeply shaped by this improvisational engineering logic. The same jugaad approach that keeps trucks running, builds roadside solutions, or adapts machinery to local conditions also underpins how these rigs are constructed, transported, and scaled up for public events. The result is not a deviation from technical practice, but a distinct regional mode of it: one where experimentation, adaptation, and visible ingenuity are inseparable from how sound systems are designed, deployed, and ultimately turned into instruments of both celebration and competition. 📍Area Nord (Neapolitan Hinterland) - south sonic core - sonic rituals connected with the Easter Monday celebrations (Lunedì in Albis) From the Monday morning several Paranze are parading Frattaminore and the surrounding towns of the area nord-est of Napoli metropolitan area. While parading the streets they often look for other sound walls to engage a sound-clash based only on the use of specific sonic loops (mostly played live by bands) and loudness. Sometimes to intensify the loudness and the euphoric state of chaos some Paranze add a siren alarm on top of their sonic loop (vid 3, 5, 6, 7) Euphory, chaos and loudness are the only things that matter in the clash ___ Vid 1 - Paranza Bulldog vs Paranza Pocho by Napoli-wg6yx Vid 2 - Paranza Principe vs Paranza Orgoglio Frattese by FanParanzaPrincipe Vid 4 - Paranza Mastini sfida il violino by paranzefestafujentiofficia3770 Vid 7 - Paranza Leoni by giuseppedolciame4095 Vid 9 - Paranza Junior Gioventù by paranzefestafujentiofficia3770 Vid 11 - Paranza Pocho 2017 by mrcastiellosilvio by @mbeseries
📍Frattaminore (Naples) - sound-clash during local sonic rituals of Easter Monday (Lunedì in Albis) Groups of people called Paranze carry their sound walls parading Frattaminore and the surroundings towns. During the parade when they meet other walls they usually face each other starting a sound-clash based only on the use of short sonic loops (sometimes played live with a band) and loudness. Here Paranza Pocho and Paranza Mastini face each other boosting their respective sonic loops. Paranza Pocho using a guitar while Paranza Mastini a violin as main instruments to overcome the loudness of the other wall. _south sonic core video dated 2018 by @mbeseries

MBE011 NDE - Ora Oris - mixtape curated by Niño De Elche 🔗 cassette + A3 insert (link in bio) For MBE series Niño De Elche curated and assembled a 60 minutes recording focussing around the Melisma and its declination and articulation in the Mediterranean area. Melisma is a vocal technique in which a single syllable of text is sung over a sequence of multiple notes. Rather than moving from one syllable to the next quickly, the singer stretches the vowel sound across a long, ornamented melodic line. This creates a flowing, expressive, and often trance inducing musical effect. Melismatic music is widespread across the Mediterranean, from popular folk music to liturgical chants mainly influenced by ancient Greek, Near Eastern, North African and later Byzantine and Arabs cultures. In the words of Niño De Elche: “I have the pleasure of sharing with you a brief selection of singers who, in my view, have turned their melismatic singing into common spaces. When we take the Mediterranean Sea as our point of departure, we open ourselves to a cross-listening of multiple aesthetic forms that have emerged across different territories and communities. A melisma repeated many times is a good summary of the trance to which popular singing and its music lead us, where not only the vocal expression becomes a reference, but also the dances and sounds with their violences, terrors, and celebrations. This compilation aims to be an approach to all of that. I hope you enjoy it.” Mixtape curated and assembled by Niño De Elche Poster by Augusto Fabio Cerqua Credit photo Juan Carlos Quindós (courtesy of Francisco Contreras) Poster printed by Club Del Prado MBE series 2025 - Curated by Giovanni Napolano by @mbeseries
MBE011 NDE - Ora Oris - mixtape curated by Niño De Elche 🔗 cassette + A3 insert (link in bio) Francisco Contreras aka Niño De Elche is an indisciplinar avantgarde exflamenco singer and theorist. On an hypothetical extension of the studies of Demetrio Stratos, Niño De Elche deconstructs its chant to the form of "Cantare La Voce" (singing the voice). Starting from this theoretical asset, for MBE series he curated and assembled a 60 minutes recording focussing around the Melisma and its declination and articulation in the Mediterranean area. Melisma is a vocal technique in which a single syllable of text is sung over a sequence of multiple notes. Rather than moving from one syllable to the next quickly, the singer stretches the vowel sound across a long, ornamented melodic line.
