Congratulations, Kyle MacLachlan, on a candid, thoughtful, and illuminating memoir that made me—a person who has never “acted” a day in his life—think about the ways that I’ve, in fact, acted every day of my life. Thank you for your insight into your remarkable career, your honesty and good humor(even about the pool scene), and for permanently introducing the phrase “holy mackerel” into my vocabulary. And thanks to the dream team who brought this book into the world at @crownpublishing, including my editorial doppelgänger @kadedits by @mbi103

I woke up with a heavy heart today, thinking of Dolly Parton’s family and everyone touched by her music. Then I thought about the joy and kindness she brought to the world, and I was grateful that we had her as long as we did. As many of you know, editing two books by Dolly has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional life. Everything you’ve read about her—her warmth, her work ethic, her love of books, her legendary sense of humor—is true.

But the news of her death hit me particularly hard because I received it as I drove back to NYC from my hometown in PA. Just hours earlier, my mom was showing me books that family members had received from Dolly’s Imagination Library, a remarkable philanthropic commitment to literacy that spread the power of reading around the world. It was a fitting moment: As a kid growing up far from Nashville or Hollywood, I was initially drawn in by Dolly’s rhinestones, her wigs, and her one-liners, but as an adult, I fell in love with her storytelling as a songwriter. One of my favorite songs is “Wildflowers” from her Trio album with Linda and Emmylou, and I hope Dolly won’t mind if I quote a few lines that have always spoken to me—and that were on my mind as I drove toward Brooklyn yesterday—because no one expresses an emotion better than she does:

So I uprooted myself from my home ground and left
Took my dreams and I took to the road
When a flower grows wild
It can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

I’ve always thought of Dolly as the patron saint of “wildflowers”—those unruly people who follow their big dreams no matter how far they take them, who seek out places where they belong and can live undimmed, who survive wherever they land. I think that’s why people say that Dolly is the best expression of what America can be. She could look back fondly on her home, even as she woke up each day with more dreams to follow, more ways for the girl in these photos to become the unique woman she was meant to be.

As I grieve her loss, I also celebrate her staggering cultural legacy. There will never be another @dollyparton, but she leaves behind a world forever following in her high-heeled footsteps. by @mbi103
