82 years ago today, on the morning of
June 6th 1944, "BOLD", one of the amphibious Direct Drive Sherman tanks belonging to 'B' Squadron in the First Hussars 6th Armoured regiment of the Canadian Army launched into the rough waters of the English Channel almost 5,000 yards from the shores of JUNO beach to lead the first wave of attacks on Courseulles-sur-Mer.

Their objective was to provide immediate, heavy armored support to the infantry landing at JUNO. As the tank neared the shore, these tanks were targeted by intense German small-arms and artillery fire. This plus the rough seas caused the tank's canvas flotation screen to fail, and "BOLD" quickly began filling with water.

Under heavy fire, the crew struggled to escape the rapidly sinking tank. Gunner Ross Tofflemire tragically drowned attempting to exit, while the rest of the crew managed to escape, and were later rescued by an Allied landing craft. Of the 19 DD tanks in B Squadron, only 9 successfully made it onto the beach that morning.

Bold was raised from the sea in 1971 and is now a Canadian Second World War monument in Place Léo Gariépy, Courseulles-sur-Mer.

A friendly reminder that today is the last day to pre-register for the Summer Show 'n' Shine on Sunday August 4th from 11 AM - 3 PM at the Princess auto store located at 515 Panet rd. in Winnipeg.

To pre-register simply stop by the store or call 204-669-4252.
