#onthisday December 12th 2022. A day that was unlike any other. Commuters and civilians broke the morning silence with cheering of the brand new #greenlineextension to Medford Tufts. Commuters and citizens gathered at the new stations and celebrated the arrival of the first train to Medford Tufts. The public and the press greeted the first train with grand applause and cheer. I myself was privileged to ride the #glx on opening day and all though I rode this portion of the green line hundreds of times, walking into the new Medford Tufts and riding on the new tracks felt magical and unreal. The feeling of joy and relief that this much waited transit line finally opened in the most wonderful time of the year was a great gift from the #mbta Throughout the day and even the week the city of Somerville celebrated the new stations of Medford Tufts, Ball square, Magoun square, Gilman square and East Somerville. December 12th marks the opening of one of the MBTAs biggest transit extensions and the city of Somerville and it's people are extremely thankful for it's arrival.

Brand new type 10 super car 4002 has arrived at riverside yard today and is the next generation of light rail transit in Boston.

These trains will gradually replace the Kinki Shyro type 7/7.5 trolleys and the Breada tyle 8 trolleys on the MBTA green line. This is an exciting leap into the future with these new MBTA trains.

These trains will undergo testing then will eventually make their way into regular service on the MBTA green line, once in service these trains will add additional capacity to the green line and bring the oldest subway in the United States into the new age of light rail transportation!

The world trade center path station is one of two terminal stations the Port Authority Trans Hudson or path train system terminates their trains in New York City.

This network of trains is operated by the New York and New Jersey Port Authority. This system of trains has carried passengers to New York and New Jersey under the Hudson River for more than a century. This particular station was originally named the Hudson terminal and the railroad that built the system was called the Hudson in Manhattan railroad.

The system was built in the early 20th century asva commuter railroad to provide an alternative to slow and congested ferries across the Hudson River. Bored under the Hudson River using early tunnel shield technology, Four tunnels were dug between New Jersey and New York. Two served the PATH 36th Street line and Two served the Hudson terminal line. The Hudson terminal station was built as a large loop with 4 platforms. Two platforms serving trains to Hoboken and two platforms serving trains to Newark NJ.

In the 1970s. When the original world trade center was being constructed, the Port Authority acquired the financially struggling Hudson and Manhattan railroad and renamed it to the Port Authority Trans Hudson or PATH.

When the world trade center was tragically destroyed, the PATH station was completely destroyed. In the reconstruction of the world trade center. The new PATH station crossed over two of the original footprints for the towers as part of a compromise. One of the original footprints can be seen to this day through glass panels on the platform. The other towers footprints can be seen through markings where they originally were like.

25 years ago the United States was changed forever.

On September 11th 2001 two planes were hijacked and flown into the twin towers of the world trade center. At 8:46am the North Tower was hit, at 9:03am the south tower was hit. After two hours of continuous burning the towers tragically collapsed taking the lives of 2,977 civilians.

25 years later we honor and never forget the brave heroes from the FDNY, NYPD and EMS that risked and gave their lives to save civilians from the WTC. And we shall never forget those we lost on that horrific day.

#onthisday in 1897 the first streetcar trolley in Boston descended into the Tremont street subway stopping at Boylston station and eventually Park Street station making thr first revenue run of thr first Subway in the United States of America.

Over the years Park Street and Boylston stations have been at the center of the Downtown Subway of the Present day MBTA Green Line (Formerly named the Tremont Street subway)

After the subway opened the people of Boston loved it. Extensions such as Scollay square and north, Extensions to the tunnels with Arlington, Copley, Massachusetts (Now Hynes convention center) and more statons opening.

These stations have seen thousands of vehicles and millions of people flowing through, from the original wooden trolleys to the modern Tupe 9 Light rail vehicles (pictured in photo 1). These stations have seen many eras of service from the original streetcar companies of Boston, to the MTA, to the present day Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority or MBTA. and will continue to serve generations to come!

Happy 129th anniversary to the Tremont Street subway. The oldest in the Nation!

The Washington DC streetcar was a bold step in bringing back streetcar service to the nation's capital. A bold ambitious plan that unfortunately met a sad end will never be forgotten.

Opened in 2016 this light rail service operated from Washington DC Union station to Benning road, this service ran along a 2.4 mile line along H street and Benning road.

With a free fare, this line carried approximately 835,900 people annually, however after the COVID 19 pandemic ridership plummeted and wasn't able to recover.

The low ridership is a contributing factor to what caused the DC streetcar to ultimately end service on March 31st 2026. And the service was ultimately replaced by the bus route D20.
