Program co-director Dr. Pete Kirwan gave a keynote address for the biennial conference of Resurgens Theatre in Atlanta, GA, at the end of September. The conference, "Apocrypha Now!", coincided with the theatre doing a year-long season of plays of disputed Shakespearean authorship, and conference attendees were treated to productions of Mucedorus and Gary Taylor's reconstructed version of Cardenio. Dr. Kirwan's paper, "Performing in the Shadow of Shakespeare", talked about the value of apocryphal plays for foregrounding theatre artists' own work, profiling our program's 2023 Ren Show of The Birth of Merlin.

Pete's reviews of Resurgens' productions of Mucedorus and Cardenio can be found on his blog:

Join Mountain Laurel Shakespeare Ensemble for a double feature of our Education Productions on September 28th and 29th!

The night kicks off at 6pm with a 25-minute retelling of CYMBELINE called PRINCESS IMOGEN AND THE ENCHANTED BEARS. After a brief interlude, the fun continues at 7:30pm with THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA. Directors Rachael Klein and Haleigh Acosta enliven this old tale of love and betrayal with a blend of fantastical costuming and nineties sparkle. Best friends Proteus and Valentine are parting for a while, one staying home with his beau and the other continuing his singlehood abroad. But with a change of travel plans, their bonds soon begin to strain. In Milan, Sylvia and her lover get engaged behind her father’s back, only for her lover’s friend to rat him out and try to woo her instead. On top of this, the new suitor’s girlfriend is in town to surprise him, and is about to receive an unpleasant surprise herself. Acosta and Klein focus on the way characters use each other as interchangeable proxies to critique cultures of toxic masculinity and highlight female solidarity.

Registration for tickets can be found in our bio!

PLEASE NOTE: due to the time gap between performances and the varied nature of the intended audiences of these productions, tickets for these shows are NOT being grouped into one event. If you plan to see both performances you MUST register for both events!

We hope to see you there! taken in Mary Baldwin University Shakespeare and Performance by @mbushakespeare

Join Mountain Laurel Shakespeare Ensemble for a double feature of our Education Productions on September 28th and 29th!

The evening will kick off at 6pm with PRINCESS IMOGEN AND THE ENCHANTED BEARS, a devised retelling of CYMBELINE in which Emmet Temple, Kelsey Rich, Sam M Acosta, and Sarah Clayton have adapted Shakespeare’s little-known romance, but not unfamiliar to our company, into a twenty-five-minute tale for elementary-age audiences. The story follows the journey of the princess Imogen after the loss of her mother. Struggling to come to terms with her new reality and the scope of her feelings, Imogen travels into the woods near her home. The woods are as unfamiliar to her as life without her mother, but the forest’s denizens include friendly forces who can help her on her way forward. The production focuses on helping young viewers build emotional skills to manage big feelings, process grief, and develop resilience.

PRINCESS IMOGEN AND THE ENCHANTED BEARS will be followed by a brief interlude before a 60-minute production of THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA plays at 7:30pm in the same space.

Registration for tickets can be found in our bio!

PLEASE NOTE: due to the time gap between performances and the varied nature of the intended audiences of these productions, tickets for these shows are NOT being grouped into one event. If you plan to see both performances you MUST register for both events!

Thank you for everyone who joined us for Mountain Laurel’s MFA maiden voyage and for S&P’s first production in New Place. Any guesses about which characters from our season made an appearance on our journey into orbit?

Check back later for more of our company and tomorrow for more info on our Education shows, which open September 28th!
