Maisie Stars and the Secret Life of Cactus, earth pigments and acrylic on canvas, 14” x 14”
Maisie Stars refer to the oldest known images of a galaxy with a red shift dating from approximately 390,000,000 years after The Big Bang. It shows up red in imagery since it is the oldest image of stars or a Galaxy. When discovered it happened to be on the birthday of an astronomer’s daughter, Maisie. The red speckles were intentional in the midst of this painting and coinciding with this abstract portrayal of a cactus. Cactus plants are very curious to me visually as they entertain a figurative appearance and are also highly resilient plant forms; they’re truly strange plants but I find them fascinating. I like the association of this chance encounter with the Maisie Stars and the figurative element of cactus.
