Most emcees strive to skip straight into Dinner and Dance. Big stage, most fun, best paid.
But it's not a starting genre. It's the sum of five others: pause control from roadshows, adaptability from family carnivals, reading the room from weddings, restraint from galas and conferences.
Skip those stages and you're missing the actual skill set.

Roadshow is instant noodle. Quick, simple, you work with what you're given.
Dinner and Dance is fine dining. You're the head chef, and the whole night is on you.
Everything else sits in between. Community events, weddings, awards nights, each one tests something different. Some I've gotten good at. Some, honestly, still working on.
D&D is the accumulation of everything. That's the whole pyramid in one night. by @mcderrickyip

People always ask me during planning: "Derrick, are we doing mass dance or not?"
Honest answer.
I don't fully decide until I'm in the room.
Some moments are fixed. Award ceremonies, staff performances, group photo. These stay, no matter what.
The games, icebreakers, mass dance. Those I decide based on your crowd, on the night itself.

People remember the moments. The laughs, the energy, the room coming alive.
What they don't see is everything that made those moments possible.
Reading the room before it needs reading. Adjusting the flow before anyone notices it's off. Building enough warmth early so that when things don't go to plan, the audience stays with you anyway.
That's the job. The whole night. Not just the parts that look good on a highlight reel.

Mass dance is 10, maybe 20 minutes of a 4 hour night.

It's not the benchmark. It's not even close.

What actually makes a Dinner and Dance work? Everything that happens before it. The pacing, the small wins, the rapport you build through the night.

Force the energy too early and people are just going through the motions. Earn it, and the room gives you everything.

There's a small story about YMCA in there too. You'll know it when you see it.
