The Medical College of Georgia is the state’s only public medical school, founded in 1828, and is anchored at its main campus in Augusta.

This week, Karen and I have been traveling through south and southwest Georgia, meeting with community leaders, healthcare partners and Medical College of Georgia students and residents.

A highlight was visiting the medical education campus in Thomasville and spending time with our partners at Archbold. Seeing students learn and serve in the communities that need them is a reminder of why this work matters. Strong partnerships help us prepare Georgia’s healthcare workforce and bring care closer to home. Thank you to everyone who welcomed us and shared what matters most to your communities. Georgia is our campus, and we’re proud to serve it. by @mcg_aug

The Medical College of Georgia Alumni Association and Augusta University Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement distributes stethoscopes to first-year medical students, a program that started in 2020.

Each stethoscope is individually boxed and accompanied by a heartfelt note from one of many MCG alumni who helped underwrite the cost of the instruments. Some of the gifts are personalized to the student from family or friends. by @mcg_aug

Leaders from Peach State Health Plan, the Centene Foundation and the Medical College of Georgia introduced the latest cohort of Peach State Scholars during a pinning ceremony on Friday.

Now in its sixth year, the scholars program was created to address critical physician shortages in rural and underserved areas across Georgia.

The MCG3+ Primary Care Pathway Program allows students to finish their medical school training in three years, rather than four, before directly entering a primary care residency program in Georgia.

Peach State Scholars receive student loan forgiveness in exchange for their commitment to practice in a rural or medically underserved areas in Georgia after they complete their medical training.

It was an honor to celebrate the Peach State Scholars from the Classes of 2028 and 2029 at their pinning ceremony. Through the MCG 3+ Primary Care Pathway and our partnership with @peachstatehp, these future physicians are preparing to serve rural and medically underserved communities across Georgia — places where access to care can change the course of a life. I am proud of the commitment they have made to our state and look forward to the life-changing, life-saving difference they will make for Georgia’s patients, families and communities. by @mcg_aug

Through the @mcg_aug Stethoscope Program, first-year medical students receive an MCG-branded stethoscope and a handwritten note from an alumni, creating a lasting connection between generations of physicians. 🩺

For Donna Chong (Class of 2027), that connection became even more personal when she discovered the note was written by her sister, an MCG graduate who inspired her to pursue medicine. Supported through alumni generosity, the program reflects MCG’s commitment to mentorship, tradition and investing in future physicians. 💙

“Dear Donna,

I am so honored to give you your first stethoscope. This tradition was not around when I went to MCG, but I used my first stethoscope for over 10 years. I hope this one will serve you well. You are about to start the most extraordinary chapter of your life. Don’t ever forget that God has already equipped you with everything you will need. All you have to do is lean on Him, put in the work and never lose faith. … Do your best and have fun. I love you, and I’m so proud of you.”

Your sister,
Dr. Anna Jung
