The sky may have been grey, but the vibes were sunny & bright! On the last Sunday in September, we had a blast joining Jillian from the @ecologyaction for a *free* guided hike to Flat Lake on the @mcintoshrun Trails through the Halifax Backlands.

Dubbed the “Halifax Backlands Huckleberry Hike” Jillian pointed out the abundance of Huckleberry plants just finishing their berry season, and taught us about the globally rare Jack Pine Broom Crowberry Barrens, and some of the species it supports, including the (not so common) Common Nighthawk, Pine Barren Golden Heather and Greenland Stitchwort.

This hike was part of the Hike the Greenbelt series, designed to highlight 3 key wilderness areas along urban Halifax. A great big thank you to @ourhrmalliance and the @ecologyaction for organizing, sponsoring and leading this amazing hiking series every year!

Like what you see? There are still a few hikes left in the Fall 2026 Hike the Greenbelt Series. Visit https://ecologyaction.ca/get-involved/events to register for free! Don’t have time this year? Watch out for the spring series. taken in Mcintosh Run Singletrack Trails by @mcintoshrun

The McIntosh Run Watershed is located in the district of Sipekne'katik, within Mi'kmaki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq. This is the land from which they sprouted more than 13,500 years ago and continue to live on today.

October is Mi'kmaw History Month in Nova Scotia. A reminder to learn from and with the first peoples of this land and waters. One way to do that is to learn Mi'kmaw place names. Check out the Mi'kmaw place names digital atlas to begin. by @mcintoshrun

Ospreys, Pandion haliaetus, are the provincial bird of Nova Scotia (adopted in 1994). Ospreys are large raptors, primarily eating fish.

Breeding grounds range from Newfoundland to the Gulf Coast, and wintering in the southern United States and Argentina.

Ospreys usually mate for life. Osprey nests are built of sticks and lined with bark, sod, grasses, vines, and more. The male gathers most of the nesting material and the female arranges it. 1-4 eggs are laid in a brood, with one brood per year. The young begin to leave the nest when they are seven to eight weeks old, learning to fly with encouragement from their parents.

Ospreys live in the McIntosh Run Watershed. These beautiful photos were taken by Catherine Mason. by @mcintoshrun

A sunrise over the watershed.

The McIntosh Run River flows within the Halifax Regional Municipality on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. About 13 kilometres of river feed into Long Lake. The river flows through the community of Spryfield and into the “Backlands” (between Herring Cove and Purcells Cove roads) where it connects to ponds and wetlands. The McIntosh Run then drains into the Atlantic Ocean through Herring Cove.

The watershed area is about 37 square kilometres. Natural vegetation includes spruce-pine-fir forests, pine/crowberry granite barrens, and a mosaic of wetlands and lakes. About half of the land is private, and half is provincial Crown land. by @mcintoshrun

Why trails, hikes, runs, and rides? Because people need to experience and care about the natural spaces we want protected.

The McIntosh Run Watershed Association (MRWA) began in 1994 as a voice for the McIntosh Run, its tributary waters and the land within its watershed. The goals of MRWA are to further conservation and community stewardship of and to facilitate sustainable public access to the McIntosh Run watershed. MRWA is the trail manager for the singletrack trail system, under agreements with provincial and municipal governments. It leads the vision, construction, and maintenance of the trails. by @mcintoshrun

Big thanks to Jiwei for jumping in for his first ever trail work day. Welcome to the crew! 😎

Meanwhile, Kim trimmed a third of the way towards the McRun bridge. One trail, many hands, lots of progress!

Want to get involved? Come join MRWA volunteer crew. No experience needed, just a willingness to get a little dirty. 🥾 DM for WhatsApp chat link 🔗 taken in Mcintosh Run Singletrack Trails by @mcintoshrun
