It feels like just yesterday Dzana and I were working at the same location when she ran to my car to tell me she was pregnant. Now here we are, photographing each other with our beautiful babies! Our boys are only 3 months apart — doing motherhood together feels soooo sweet. I’ll never get tired of photographing this family.😭🤎

How I creatively photograph families who don’t share their child’s face online!🤍

Close up details are a great go-to. As children grow, their features are constantly changing. Every mother loves seeing a photo of their baby’s little fingers and toes (bonus points if they’re sandy)! It’s also so important to frame intentionally. Place yourself (and your camera) just out of reach of their face. To some — while culling this might’ve been a skip, but to a mother who wants to share her photos but doesn’t want her baby’s face in them? This shot is golden.

Movements that are not forward facing! Most kids do well when given a task rather than being asked to sit still for a photo. This is a great way to keep them happy, keep their face away from the camera, and still get great photos!

Encourage distractions! Let’s take “look at me” out of our vocabulary for this photoshoot. Instead, encourage them to look wherever they want and just keep shooting.

Incorporate some blur! This is an easy way to focus more on fun movements, and less on hiding from the camera.

The most important piece of advice I could give you on this topic: ALWAYS ASK BEFORE SHARING PHOTOS OF SOMEONE ELSE’S CHILDREN ONLINE. Personally, this is addressed in my contract that all of my clients are required to sign in the booking process, but if they don’t want their photos shared — it’s simple, don’t share them! taken in Oahu, Hawaii by @mckennakeaophoto

Truly a perfect north shore evening spent with these repeat clients of mine.🌞 We started at their rental @alohasurfcabins and ended at our favorite beach where we took their maternity and family photos in 2024 & 2025.
