The acorn woodpecker. These nut jobs spend their days collecting acorns and storing them in tiny holes in old decaying snags or dying branches. These storage locations are referred to as a granaries. The granaries can have up to 50,000 holes for storing acorns. Creating and defending these acorn storage locations means that their territorial range is limited. Healthy mature oak trees enable these industrious birds to thrive.

Here in the Willamette Valley where these woodpeckers live it is estimated that 95% of the original oak savanna habitat has been lost to European settlement. With agriculture and a preference for Douglas fir plantings for timber harvest being key factors for habitat loss. The land was originally maintained through fire, which includes intentional burning and by seasonal flooding.

Sometimes when painting a mural, especially for a public space, concepts can change quickly. This is part of the process. I've improved my editing skills quite a bit over the years! I imagine most creators have had similar experiences. Of course there are also hundreds maybe thousands of concepts that get abandoned or stashed away to hopefully get used later. taken in Forest Grove, Oregon by @mclaughlin_arts

20 pictures for 2025. It was a tough year in all honesty, but I’m happy I was able to see more of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest through my wildlife biologist field work. I even got to scare off a bear while hiking alone in remote area! In 2025 I was also able to prove that any idiot can be a carpenter, and other than a post landing on my head the greenhouse and chicken run construction went smoothly. I painted a few murals and signs as well, and found lots of edible mushrooms, many larger than a human head! On to 2026. taken in Forest Grove, Oregon by @mclaughlin_arts

Trompe l’oeil for a wonderful client. The home has a short wall between the kitchen and living room that is high traffic causing people to run into or knock down anything hung or against the wall in that spot. Trompe l’oeil is French term that means “trick the eye”. I made this illusion of a shelf to fit in with the space. It was fun to paint. Earlier this week I repainted the boot print design for Doc Martens in downtown Portland. It’s five floors up on the outside of the elavator shaft. The design was damaged by a high climbing graffiti artist.
