Yesterday, we unexpectedly said goodbye to Gunner, our gentle giant and a beloved member of our family.

Gunner was born on January 23, 2017, and came into our lives shortly after -- just after Murphy and I got engaged. Before we had kids, we were those crazy people who treated him like our kid. He went everywhere with us, was part of every family photo, and was there for nearly every milestone as we built our life together.

Then came Millie, Malachi, and Micah, and Gunner took on a new role: their loyal companion and protector.

He was the sweetest, most gentle 105lb dog you could ever imagine. All three of our kids grew up climbing on him, pulling on him, and loving on him, and he never showed anything but patience and affection.

Whether we were at home or out at the ranch, Gunner was never far from the kids. Wherever they went, he followed, always keeping a watchful eye on them.

As our family grew, life got busier, and we didn't always have as much time for him as we did in those early years. That's one of the things that makes losing him so hard. You always think there will be more time.

Just yesterday, he was eating, playing, and acting like his normal self. Today, without warning, he developed a twisted stomach (GDV), a devastating condition that took his life before the veterinarians could get him into surgery.

We never imagined we'd be saying goodbye to him today.

Gunner was with us before we were married, before we became parents, before we bought our first house together and through every chapter of our growing family. He watched us build a life together, and then spent his years helping us watch over the three little blessings who came along.

Our home won't be the same without him, and neither will our trips to the ranch.

Rest easy, Gunner. Thank you for loving our family, protecting our babies, and giving us nearly ten years of unconditional love.
