Motherhood across generations. 🤍
My mother. My daughter. My son. Me.

A reminder that love does not end. It changes form. It stretches across heaven and earth.

Grateful for every moment, every memory, every miracle. 🌸

Happy Mother’s Day.

There are no words for catastrophic loss.

But presence still matters—especially after everyone else has moved on.

Two shots of our last birthday celebration for Gabrielle. Seven years old. Hard to comprehend that she would be 17, but I have watched her friends evolve from little girls to young women.

Some solace imagining her getting to celebrate with her Papa again. 🫶🏽🦋💔 by @mdhord

Words usually come easily to me.

Most other things do not.

I wanted to share these pictures sooner, but I needed a little time.

On Friday, we celebrated what would have been my father’s 80th birthday.

On Saturday, we gathered to remember his life.

That wasn’t the plan.

The plan was Daddy blowing out 80 candles with his baby grandson beside him.

For the first several weeks after he died, the television producer in me took over.

I focused on the program.

The flowers.

The music.

The timeline.

Anything I could organize.

Anything that kept me from sitting too long with the reality that my father was gone.

Grief can be strangely productive.

Until it isn’t.

Now the quiet has arrived.

When I get a new picture of Alexander, my first instinct is still to send it to Daddy.

Every Sunday evening, I still expect the phone to ring.

For most of my life, some part of my mind was occupied by my father.

Worrying about him.

Laughing with him.

Trying to understand him.

Loving him.

And now the absence in that space is vast.

I know he’s okay.

My faith tells me he is whole, at peace, and with our other beloveds.

But faith doesn’t erase missing someone.

It simply gives the missing somewhere to go.

This weekend we laughed.

We cried.

We sang.

We remembered.

We paid attention to a man such as this.

The measure of a life is in the imprint left on the people who gather when you’re gone.

Thank you to everyone who helped us honor my dad.

He would have loved every minute of it.

Especially the singing.

My dad, Noel Hord, lived a life of perseverance, purpose, and quiet strength.

From his early days in the shoe business to becoming president of Nine West, he opened doors in an industry where few people who looked like him had been given the chance to lead. As The Wall Street Journal noted, he once called himself the “Jackie Robinson of retailing” — a reflection of the barriers he faced and the doors he helped open throughout his career.

To me, he was Dad (and Papa) first. But I am so proud that his story, his work, and his legacy are being recognized.

Thank you to @wsj for honoring his life and career (#linkinbio) by @mdhord

Whew...I just finished my latest read The Other Side of Yet @mdhord
and I'm at a loss for words. The loss of a child leaves you broken and lost in so many ways. It took me a little longer than I'd planned because I wanted to savor it to help nurse my grief. And that it did. Thank you for having the courage make your testimony a story to be shared. I like you may never be healed, but I continue to move forward to my Yet.
Thank you @krishantrotman for the recommendation and @marisareneelee for your GIL Retreat. Every connection is a blessing to me on this journey.

He is gone. And yet.

My father, Noel Hord, believed in beginnings. In walking into a room like something good was about to happen — because with him, it usually did.

He was the first Black salesperson in downtown Terre Haute, Indiana. 1967. He didn't lead with that fact often. He didn't need to. It lived in the way he carried himself — like a man who had already walked through doors that weren't meant to open, and decided, quietly, that all the rest of them would.

He went on to become President. Of Nine West. Of US Shoe. Of BCBG. Of Donald J Pliner. He built things. He led people. He made the ordinary extraordinary — and somewhere along the way, without either of us fully naming it, he handed that instinct to me.

I am a television producer because of him. Not because he taught me the craft. Because he taught me the *reveal.* That's producing. That's also just… Noel Hord.

What he left behind is not an impression. Impressions fade. What he left is an *imprint.*

Today I am just his daughter, standing at the edge of a Father's Day that will never be the same.

But I am standing. He would want that.

Happy Father's Day, Daddy. by @mdhord
