Today is International ME/CFS Awareness Day 💙 65M+ people are now estimated to have ME/CFS worldwide — up from 17–24M before the pandemic. Up to 58% of Long COVID patients meet ME/CFS criteria. ME/CFS is a severe neuroimmune disease whose hallmark symptom is PEM (Post-Exertional Malaise): even small amounts of physical or mental exertion can cause a major worsening of symptoms. Repeated PEM can lead to long-term deterioration. 25% of patients are housebound or bedridden. Over 91% remain undiagnosed. Women are diagnosed 3–4x more often than men. Up to 57% of patients have contemplated suicide. ME/CFS causes an estimated $51B annual economic burden in the US alone.
