🌿 A Little Summer Saved for Winter!

As autumn settles in, we’re harvesting the last of our garden basil and turning it into jars of fresh, homemade pesto.

There’s something wonderful about capturing the flavors of summer and enjoying them long after the garden has gone to sleep.

Perfect for tossing with pasta, stirring into soups, spreading on crusty bread, or adding a little freshness to winter meals.

❄️ Our pesto tip: Make it now, freeze it for winter! Homemade pesto isn’t shelf-stable, so freeze it in freezer-safe jars, leaving room for expansion. Simply thaw in the refrigerator when you’re ready for a taste of summer.

🌿 Want to make your own? Visit the Mead Meadow website and look for our Basil Pesto recipe in the Recipes section. You’ll be glad you made extra when winter arrives!

A little garden sunshine, saved for a snowy day. 💚

Good Food, Thoughtfully Made.

This morning, as the sunlight streamed across our screened porch, I realized it didn’t need to hold anything at all. Thank you Michael and Lisa @1025antiques for finding this beautiful bowl from the @charles_spada Collection.

✨ Flowers have a way of bringing people together.

Every Monday morning, Angela is up before sunrise, cutting fresh flowers from our garden to create bouquets for the Community Blooms program at Mainspring Footprints Food Pantry.

This week, two little girls spotted the flowers and asked, “Can we have some too?” 💐 Their smiles said everything.

It’s a reminder that the simplest acts of kindness can brighten someone’s entire day.

She draws people to her everywhere she goes — with warmth, generosity, humor, and grace.
I’m lucky to walk through life beside her.

Back in the Red River Valley last week, watching another spring season begin. 🌱

My nephew, Ryan, was out planting sugar beets — long days, wide skies, and generations of hard work rolling across the family farm in Minnesota. There’s something grounding about watching the fields come to life again after winter.

Six generations of farming have a way of teaching patience, resilience, and gratitude for the people who work the land.

Early March in Newport—quiet, unhurried, and full of memorable meals.

A few days of great food, good company, and that unmistakable coastal charm.

Newport in March just feels different… in the best way.

Early March in Newport.

A quiet escape, just steps from our hotel—
walking from one table to the next,
taking our time, and enjoying every bite.

From the historic charm of White Horse Tavern,
to dinner at The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection,
and an evening at Giusto—
each one a reminder of why we keep coming back.

Good food. Good cocktails.
And a few quiet days to slow down and enjoy it all.

Newport in March has a way of doing that.

We traveled to Cancun this February to celebrate Ryan and Cassidy, and it was everything a wedding should be—joyful, beautiful, and filled with time spent together.

Sunsets, laughter, family, friends, and a few unforgettable days in a place that felt a world away.
Cassidy was radiant, Ryan beaming, and we felt so lucky to be part of it all. taken in Cancún, México by @meadmeadow

Fourteen seats at the table.

Before the candles were lit, there was the quiet work — trays of seafood gratin layered and finished by hand, ready to be baked just before serving. Thank you, @inagarten, for the delicious recipe.

Then the house filled.

Librarians with borrowed books.
Bartenders with polished shakers.
Friends gathered beneath a chandelier and a banner marking 71 years.

For Mike’s birthday, we transformed our dining room into a literary library — a table lined with classic authors, brass frames, candlelight, and just enough mischief between the stacks.

Angela, Kay, and Tomi stepped fully into character as our evening “librarians,” guarding the stories — and a few carefully hidden clues — that would unfold throughout the night.

A little 1955 trivia.
A final round that ended in Mickey Mouse ears — a nod to the opening of Disneyland in 1955, the year Mike was born.

Dinner, when done thoughtfully, becomes more than a meal. It becomes a memory.

One candle to close the night.
Happy Birthday, Mike. ✨📚

A winter table set among writers.

Stacks of worn volumes.
Brass catching candlelight.
Portraits of the minds who shaped generations:

Faulkner. Hemingway. Dickens. Fitzgerald.
Joyce. Twain. Hawthorne.

Each place marked with a library card.
Each setting arranged as homage to story — to craft, to voice, to the written word.

And finally, the reason for it all —
a celebration of our friend Mike Ervolini, whose new book Skill vs. Luck reminds us that mastery is never accidental.

Birthday Dinner as tribute.
A table where authors kept company.
