Its my first time hard posting in 4-5 years and I feel ready to be back. It feels like I’ve lived many lives since sharing on here and in many very literal ways I have. The last 5 years of nearly full time travel has been a surprisingly internal experience for me. The more I moved around, the less I shared, until gradually I shared nothing at all. It stopped feeling important, stopped being the point. For the first time in a long time, I’m interested in sharing what I’ve been documenting. To be honest I have no idea where to begin. I have hundreds of thousands of photos and videos of cheese makers and miners, weavers and fishermen, woodsmen and bakers and craftspeople and makers all over the world. But mostly in Italy, where my heart has been for the past decade. These were taken in Sardinia in 2022. I went to Sardinia to meet the last woman in the world still producing and spinning sea silk, an incredibly soft and lustrous golden fiber produced by the endangered Pinna nobilis mollusk. The history of sea silk stretches back thousands of years—Chiara is a 28th generation sea silk weaver, and the last woman in the world with both the technical knowledge and legal rights to produce it. It cannot be bought or sold, only gifted, and it is deeply rooted in an incredibly ancient, almost Paleolithic animism that underpins spirituality in Sardinia. Chiara considers herself a witch or a shaman, she sings and chants and casts spells as she works, speaking a combination of mainland Italian and Sardo, a language that is almost extinct. I first read about her at 14 years old—I was deeply introverted and bookish and obsessed with archaeology and nature and mysticism. Finally meeting her, clambering around her windswept island and swimming in the coves of emerald green water she free dives in every morning to collect the silk, felt like a fever dream.
