Some guy in Big Sur

Started taking photos of this guy every few days on January 14 as he started his ascent towards the stars. Made it to June 29 before the landscapers chopped it off. Clearly had no idea how tall he would get. Turned out alright. by @meaninglessmind

Had my favorite nieces stay with me recently. We went to beaches and braved the ridiculous wind of the weekend. It feels like that’s all we really did this time but I think that’s okay. They have a way of finding fun which tends to be contagious.

This is Sherry. She was my ma.

She was fiercely independent, infinitely creative, curious as a kitty, more stubborn than a mountain, as wise as an owl and often misunderstood. She was good at anything she tried but eventually settled on carpentry/general contractor type work. She built our barn and house in Auburn among many other things.

We had a complicated relationship. She brought me to Big Sur when I was 12 and raised me alone through my teenage years. It wasn’t easy for either of us but ultimately the best thing she could have done for me.

I didn’t know her with her straight hair. I mostly knew her when she rocked the perm and wonder why she kept doing that after seeing pictures with her straight hair. She also had terrible taste in music, this song was one of her favorites and will always remind me of her.

Today marks 20 years since I saw her last. My brothers and I were able to be there with her.

I never knew her as a real adult. There’s countless times I wish I could have heard her say ‘it’s okay’. I wonder how she would lovingly criticize the things I’ve built. What projects she would help with. What other wisdom she could lend.

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Reckon I’d put together a year end post to see if I did anything this year. Turns out I did a few things.
Hung out with Beatrice quite a bit.
Checked something off my bucket list.
Remodeled my living area.
Found and fed Lenny after another season in my wood pile.
Saw some sick shows.
Hosted my nieces for a weekend.
Tried to bring back a thanksgiving tradition.
Put up some rock walls.
Watched my cat Isis of 17 years take her last breath and buried her under a queen palm.
Met some new friends and nourished older friendships.
Watched my niece swiftly kick ass.

I started this project in late February shortly after my cat died. I had been wanting to move the kitchen to the lighter part of the house since I moved in but lacked the know how, skills and tools necessary to do it good enough. Change happened and I decided it was time to just do it.

Aside from some electrical work and moving of the gas line, I was able to do all of this with my two hands. Big thanks to Jon for the help and Chris for getting this place livable in the first place. Everything cost more than expected and I saved receipts but I’m not sure I want to face what I spent yet.

Short history of the building; it was built as a framing studio and dark room for a family business in the early 80s. The bathroom and bedroom were added on in 2006 just before I started renting.

Thanks again to everyone following along and who sent well wishes along the way. Appreciate it!

Photos turned out after/before rather than before/after and there’s a video at the end with an annoying voiceover in case you missed it.

Got to hang out with my nieces for the weekend. Did a little tide pooling, found some stuff. Cut some jump rings, made some chain. Sat by the pool, obsessed over power washing. Watched some movies, left with full breakfast bellies.
All cousins were on their best behavior and looking forward to more adventures next year. by @meaninglessmind

Welp 2024 sucked. Started with rejection, capped with rejection and sprinkled with a bit of joy somewhere in the middle.

So here’s a rock wall I put together in the last few days. It’s a little leany and was meant to have a more of an even top but it built itself into the hillside and I was already dreading moving all that damn dirt somewhere. Somewhere to start another damn project I guess. There’s still more to do here but I’ll let gravity help for a while before I finish it off.

The last slide shows where I tried to cheat gravity and I knew better from the beginning of that failure.

Rot in hell 2024. Bring it on 2025. Let’s see if we can collectively do better this time around. by @meaninglessmind

Isis appreciation post

Eighteen years ago today I walked into the SPCA looking for a cat to keep the mice away from my house. I was listening to a band called Isis at the time (not on ig so you get SUMAC) and as I looked at the suggested names on the list at the checkout counter, Isis was the only I name so it seemed fitting along with her Egyptian look.
I wasn’t sure if she was going to make it out of the last heat wave, she insisted on being at the bar where her food was kept away from the dogs but she kept falling off in her delirium. I realized the coffee table was just as accommodating and not as injury inducing if she fell.

Made a box and a shoe rack from some scrap wood I had laying around. Had intended to use a finger joint for the box but after spending most of my time building 4 failed jigs, I found the router just blew the face off the crappy plywood I was using so I went with a different joint. Also got the wrong kind of hinge so I decided it didn’t need one! Shoe rack shelves came from basement stair scraps and are the perfect width.
All practice for building cabinets I guess? by @meaninglessmind
