STORIES FROM THE LEAGUE | PRINCE CHRIS EBO IDAN DA-GAMA

What do you leave behind when your playing days are over?

Years in Rugby League can bring great memories, tough moments and even injuries. But for Prince Chris Ebo Idan Da-Gama, the journey is becoming about something bigger than staying on the field.

It is about building what comes next.

As a match official and Level 1 Match Official Educator, Prince Chris is using his experience to help develop the next generation of officials — creating another pathway for himself while contributing to the growth of Rugby League and the Federation.

Over the weekend, he led a Touch Judge session, turning experience into knowledge and knowledge into opportunity for others.

Because the legacy of a person in sport isn't only measured by the games they played.

Sometimes, it's measured by the people they helped prepare for the games that come next.

This is Prince Chris' story.
This is his impact.

History continues to be written.

Less than a month after helping deliver Uganda's first-ever International Rugby League Level 1 Coach and Match Officials courses, Kenya has now celebrated a landmark achievement of its own.

This past weekend, Kenya Rugby League Federation proudly delivered the country's first-ever Rugby League Level 1 Coaching and Match Officials courses led entirely by Kenyan nationals at Kerarapon Primary School, Kerarapon, Kajiado.

Leading this historic milestone were:

🏉 John Mbai – Level 1 Coaching Educator
🏉 Brian Odiwuory – IRL Match Official Tutor
🏉 Esther Nyambura – Assistant Match Official Educator
🏉 Faith Mutanu – Assistant Coaching Educator

This is more than a successful weekend of learning. It is the result of years of commitment, mentorship and belief in developing our own people to lead the growth of Rugby League in Kenya and beyond.

To see educators who were helping make history in Uganda only weeks ago return home to achieve another first for Kenya is a proud moment for our Federation and for African Rugby League as a whole.

Every coach educated, every match official developed and every new leader empowered strengthens the future of our game. This milestone is proof that Kenya is not only growing Rugby League; we are building the people who will shape its future for generations to come.

Congratulations to everyone who made this historic weekend possible. The journey continues, and the future has never looked brighter.

Nigeria officials have confirmed their ambition for the African nation to become a powerhouse of the women’s game with the appointment of Sydney Roosters assistant coach Melissa Spero to take charge of the Green Falcons.

Spero, who was also a member of the coaching staff for the New South Wales Blues side which created history by completing a 3-0 cleansweep of this year’s Women’s State of Origin series, has an impressive coaching record.

She has worked closely with John Strange at Sydney Roosters for the past four years - including their 2024 premiership triumph and 2025 minor premiership win and been a mentor for the club's pathways coaches.

A pioneer for female coaches at the elite level of the game, Spero has also an extensive background in player development.

Spero has coached the Australian Schoolgirls and been an assistant coach of NSW Under 19s, as well as Illawarra Steelers Tarsha Gale (U19s) and NSWRL Women’s Premiership sides.

“The appointment of Melissa Spero is a statement of intent. We are not here to make up the numbers,” Nigeria Rugby League Association Vice-Chairman Ade Adebisi said.

“Our goal has always been to be the first African nation to qualify for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup, and appointing a coach of Melissa’s calibre, with her record at the highest level of the women’s game in Australia, brings us closer to making that a reality.

“We are excited about what this appointment means for the Green Falcons and for women’s rugby league across the continent.”

Spero’s first match in charge of the Green Falcons will be against France in Perpignan on August 1.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to coach Nigeria,” Spero said. “I’ve been following their progress and from what I’ve seen and heard, the players are training hard and doing their best to grow and become better. Having athletes that are willing and want to achieve is the first step to becoming successful.

“For me, the most exciting thing is that Nigeria is just starting out on their journey, so it is a bit like Papua New Guinea 10 years ago."

IRL’s technical education project has broken new ground in Africa after the delivery of Level 1 Coach and Level 1 Match Official courses over Friday 12th and Saturday 13th June at the Elite High School, Entebbe, Uganda.

The courses, delivered in a partnership between IRL, Rugby League Uganda and Kenya Rugby League Federation, saw KRLF’s Educators leading delivery for their neighbours, resulting in Brian Odiwuory being qualified as Africa’s first Level 1 Match Official Tutor.

His colleagues Esther Nyambura and Scott Figman will also shortly qualify as Level 1 Match Official Educators once they have finalised their Level 2 CATO+ submissions.

“It’s been a privilege to witness and be part of this pioneering event in Uganda,” noted Phil Smith, IRL Senior Match Official Tutor.

“The aim of the weekend for me was two-fold: to give education through the official Level 1 Course to the Ugandan candidates and secondly to enable the Kenyans to further their own education by delivering structured sessions.

"Both of those were achieved which is extremely satisfying. I’m delighted for Brian and congratulate him on attaining Tutor status. Esther and Scott fulfilled their targets also and are well on their way to achieving Educator qualification.”
