Hello all! My name is Tabitha Barnard. I’m an adjunct professor in the photography department, and currently teaching pre-college again! Thanks for joining me today during my takeover. I had so much fun showing off the photo department, the work of our pre-college students, and some of my own work. Here are a few highlights from my stories. It has been inspiring seeing these students take on the darkroom. A totally new skill for most of them. Excited to see my fabulous photo students again next month, and to meet all the new ones! The camera as a tool relies heavily on observation as well, taking in the world through a lens. Using photography as my medium helps me understand the world around me and my place in it by giving my observations a place to focus. Most recently, this focus has led me to photograph my mother. My mother and I are changing in parallel to each other. As we grow as people, our relationship is also shifting. [𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦]: 2026 BFA Thesis Exhibition | Installation + images from @lyra.noumena ‘26𝒕𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒔Artist Statement:“When a celestial body, large enough to be held together by its own gravity, passes within a certain distance of a significantly more massive celestial body, it disintegrates. At this proximity, the Roche limit, the gravitational pull on one side of the body is much more intense than on the other side, causing these tidal forces to tear it apart.The introduction of another body to others already in orbit complicates their motion. This perturbation makes future trajectories much less predictable, with potentially cataclysmic results.This body of work circles a single point. [𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦]: 2026 BFA Thesis Exhibition | Installation + images from @artemis_tannatt_photography ‘26𝒜 𝐹𝒶𝓃𝓉𝒶𝓈𝓉𝒾𝒸𝒶𝓁 𝐸𝓈𝒸𝒶𝓅𝑒 𝒯𝒽𝓇𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽 𝒜 𝐿𝑒𝓃𝓈Artist Statement:“My parents read me stories to sleep when I was a child. Hearing these stories took me away from the everyday and led me to a different place, ones of fantasy and escape. Escapism through fantasy is my driving force for my work. I use this escapism to travel to worlds where I can create magic. I use the morals and life lessons fantasy gives as a guide map for solving problems in my world. I don’t categorize the word “fantasy” as a means of realistic hope. When I think about fantasy, I don’t think of a world that can physically happen. My obsession with fantasy stems from my imagination and the type of media I consumed growing up. I think of my own work as fictionalized reproductions of the stories I grew up with. My photographs rest in me as a reminder of how impactful these stories are to me. We also want to give a shout out to all of our Majors who hung work in the show this year!!!!Scroll through the images above to see Nate’s installation!Artist Statement:𝘋𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘐𝘵 𝘖𝘧 ... 𝘗𝘶𝘵 𝘐𝘵 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭Being born at the turn of the digital era, I never got to discover the shoe box in the attic full of prints and negatives, bent hunched over on the floor flipping through moments of my life. Instead, all 6,803 photos and videos taken of me, from birth to today, are accessible at any moment via a digital cloud archive given to me by my parents. The lack of physicality to these memoriesand their accessibility has led to my realization of my relationship with the imagery of my youth. Now bringing them into the material world, leaning into the fading of memory, and the synthesis of memory through viewing these images, I strip away visual photographic data, leaving behind a tactile imprint of childhood.𝓗𝓲𝓻𝓪𝓮𝓽𝓱In the accompanying video piece, I wanted to pay homage to both my great-grandmother and her house that no longer stands. By removing the family members and subjects from the image using computational synthetic imagery, I create a partial representation of this space while slightly altering and blurring its true reality, akin to my recollection of what it once looked like.𝓐𝓷𝓪𝓶𝓷𝓮𝓼𝓲𝓼In the curtained-off portion, after firing the flash, your eyes are momentarily burned in with a color image, followed by a reflexive blink that resets your retinal fatigue, then, as your eyes re-adjust, the green glow of the image melts away. A tradition in Commercial Photography has students selecting a painting to recreate for the Doppelgänger project.
