These robots were made for walking 🤖

Nearly 100 students in @mechcu Hod Lipson's Robotics Studio were tasked to design, fabricate, and program their own walking robots this semester. Almost every student built their own device —because when you create something this cool, who wants to share custody?
This year featured a "choose your own adventure" twist: mid-semester, students could “upgrade” their course registration from a 4000-level course to a 6000-level course, if they used AI instead of programming the robot manually. Only 10% of students took the challenge.

“My goal is to encourage Mechanical Engineering students to use AI, and to encourage Computer Science students to use hardware,” said Lipson.

The end result? A fleet of robots taking their first steps. #ColumbiaEngineering by @mechcu

🧠✨ Crystals are coming for quantum computers!
Columbia Engineering researchers, including postdoc Jesse Balgley and Professor James Hone, have developed a prototype quantum bit (qubit) using atomically thin crystalline materials. Their work, published in Physical Review Applied, introduces a modular, ultra-compact qubit design that could revolutionize how quantum computer chips are built.
