Last week, we had the honour to speak to Silvia Federici in the framework of »Counter-Images | Counter-Narratives: Feminist Aesthetics in Art and Cinema«.

She presented key ideas from her works on feminist materialism, and the following discussion linked her ideas to feminist film and art through analysis of works exploring community, loss, and resistance in contemporary cinema.

Seminar and Interdisciplinary Dialogue between the Film Academy Vienna & the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Academy of Fine Arts, 2nd floor video studio, Introduction with Christine Lang, Constanze Ruhm

In this teaching-research seminar, we analyze and discuss historical as well as current feminist film-aesthetic strategies. The focus is on materialist-feminist and intersectional critical approaches that examine the interlinking of aesthetic forms with societal relations of production and power. This perspective includes a critique of capitalism dimension that specifically interrogates the conditions of artistic production, the valorization logics of aesthetic labor, and the emancipatory potentials of critical practices. The aim is to understand how filmic and artistic works not only represent social relations but produce and reproduce them—and how they simultaneously open up possibilities for intervention to critique and transform dominant relations.

Nadia Derwish was born in 1996 in Hasaka, syria. While studying Chemistry at AL Furat University in Derazor, Syria, he dropped due to the outbreak of the Syrian civil war and returned to Hasaka and started working in cinema in 2015 at Komina Film a Rojava.

She worked as an assistant director in many feature films. She also directed the feature-length documentary Jinwar. Currently; in Syria; she is preparing a fiction feature film that will direct as a member of Komina Film a Rojava. by @media_akbild

For Rundgang 2026 the studio of Art and Time I Media is hosting a live radio broadcast in cooperation with @radioorange94.0 !

For one evening, the teaching pavilion at Lehargasse becomes a temporary radio station - with voices in conversation, sound pieces and live performances. In collaboration with Radio Orange, the 90-minute radio show will be broadcasted live on 94.0 FM. Throughout the days of Rundgang, the space continues to resonate with what radio stands for - attention, transmission and collective listening. Visitors are therefor also invited to experience works by the students in dedicated listening settings. In the booklet there will be short texts from the artists about their contributions.

The students at the studio for Art and Time | Media transform the teaching pavillon on the 1st floor of Semperdepot into a temporary radio station. During a live session on Friday, a six hour long show will be recorded and streamed. In response to the semester’s topic ‘on Violence’, Susan Sonntag’s text ‘Regarding the Pain of Others’ will be used as a scaffolding to reflect upon our perception of the pain of others through media.
