How is the natural world a medium for otherworldly contemplation?
Join us as Florence Ollivry presents her recent chapter in Cosmic and Animal Piety: Everything Glorifies God (eds. Guillaume de Vaulx d’Arcy, Asmaa El Maaroufi, Walid Ghali, and Nicolas Payen, Edinburgh University Press, 2026).
Bridging Qur’anic studies, environmental humanities, and animal ethics, Ollivry’s research explores the tafsīr of Ibn Barrajān, a twelfth-century Andalusian scholar, focusing on his understanding of the natural world and animals as figures of piety.

The 9th International Forum on Muslim Societies in Central Eurasia: Intellectual Legacy, Contemporary Realities, and Future Directions has come to a close.

Organized by the Alliance of Civilizations Institute (MEDIT) at Ibn Haldun University, the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) and the Institute of Knowledge Integration (IKI), the forum took place on 24–26 October 2026 at the Süleymaniye Salis Madrasa.

Over three days, scholars and researchers from Central Asia, the Caucasus, Europe and beyond took part in a keynote address, nine panels, a discussion panel and a special session. Topics ranged from Islamic education and knowledge integration to spirituality and psychology, Jadidism, Muslim communities in Central-Eastern Europe, and economic well-being in Central Asia.

The first Meet the Author event of the semester brought Omer Awass to MEDIT to discuss Imposing Modernity in the Global South, months before the book reaches its readers.

Awass traced how modernity entered Muslim societies through the colonial encounter, and how its institutions, from the secular state to global finance, still frame the choices of societies in the Global South. He also spoke about the many ways these societies have negotiated, adapted and pushed back against it.

The talk was followed by a rich Q&A session.

Many thanks to Omer Awass for sharing his work with us ahead of its publication, and to everyone who joined us!

Our Meet the Author series returns this semester with Omer Awass and his forthcoming book, Imposing Modernity in the Global South.

How did modernity come to Muslim societies, and on whose terms?

Awass argues that modernity in the Muslim world cannot be understood apart from its colonial foundations. Empire, secularism, capitalism and the nation-state still shape how states and societies in the Global South live, adapt and resist.

The book will be published by Bristol University Press later this year, and its first public discussion will take place at MEDIT.
