Red light, green light … one of my favourite games growing up.

Funny how red light means something completely different to me these days 😂

I’ve been getting more and more curious about the things we can do to support our bodies … recovery, energy, sleep, performance and just feeling better.

So I’m excited to start this new journey with @medwavegroup and take you along with me as I explore red light therapy and what it can add to my everyday life.

Here’s to learning, experimenting and finding new ways to take care of this body we get to do life in.

All my love

Photobiomodulation is not simply about shining red light onto the body.

The biological response begins when photons of light are absorbed by naturally occurring molecules within our cells.

One of the key cellular targets discussed in PBM research is cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme associated with the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Mitochondria play a central role in producing ATP – the energy cells use to carry out normal biological functions.

That means PBM is essentially working at a cellular level.

Research suggests that the downstream response to light absorption can influence processes associated with cellular signalling, inflammation, tissue repair and regeneration.

And in skin, those processes matter enormously.

Fibroblasts need energy to produce collagen. Keratinocytes need to proliferate and migrate during tissue repair. Wounds require a coordinated cellular response to progress through healing.

The MedWave Optimum-100S delivers 635 nm red light across a full-body treatment area, with the wavelength selected for surface and soft-tissue applications. MedWave specifically positions the device for skin health, wound care and aesthetic applications.

PBM is therefore not about "heating" the skin.

It is about using light as a biological stimulus.

Behind every healing wound is a complex network of cells working to rebuild and restore damaged tissue.

Among them, fibroblasts play a particularly important role, producing collagen and other extracellular matrix components needed for tissue repair. Research into photobiomodulation continues to explore how red and near-infrared light can influence fibroblast activity and the molecular pathways involved in wound healing.

Understanding these cellular responses helps us better understand how PBM may support the body's natural repair processes.

Where light exists, life adapts, grows and recovers.

It's a simple idea with remarkable potential. Every cell is constantly responding to its environment, and light is one of the many signals that influences how the body functions.

Understanding those natural biological processes continues to shape new possibilities in modern healthcare.

Your skin may be the part of your body you see every day, but beneath the surface is a highly active biological environment.

Skin cells are constantly communicating, producing energy, responding to inflammation and working to repair and renew tissue.

This is where photobiomodulation (PBM) becomes particularly interesting.

PBM uses specific wavelengths of visible red and near-infrared light to interact with biological tissue and influence cellular processes. Rather than removing, burning or damaging tissue, PBM is designed to stimulate biological responses through the absorption of light by naturally occurring cellular components known as chromophores.

Research into PBM in dermatology now spans areas including skin rejuvenation, wound healing, scars, inflammatory processes and acne.

For MedWave, this science is central to the Optimum-100S.

The device delivers a precision 635 nm red-light wavelength, specifically designed for surface and soft-tissue applications including skin health, aesthetics and wound care.

Because healthy skin is not only about what you put on it.

It is also about what is happening inside the cells themselves.

Cells don't function in isolation—they exist within an intricate support network known as the extracellular matrix.

This highly organised structure provides mechanical support while regulating cellular communication, migration and tissue organisation. A healthy extracellular matrix is fundamental to normal tissue function, repair and regeneration.

The extracellular matrix is built from a mix of structural proteins — mainly collagen and elastin — along with proteoglycans and fibronectin, which together form a scaffold that gives tissue both strength and flexibility. Cells attach to this scaffold through surface receptors called integrins, which don't just anchor the cell physically — they also relay mechanical information from the matrix into the cell, a process known as mechanotransduction. This is part of how cells "sense" their environment and decide whether to grow, migrate, or begin repair, making the extracellular matrix an active participant in healing rather than just a passive structural backdrop.
