Aloha @thesfs! My name’s Michelle Zhou (meeesh.z), and I’m a 2017 alumni of @sfs_tanzania! As a pre-dental student from Austin College, I took an untraditional path by joining the wildlife conservation and environmental program in Rhotia, Tanzania with SFS. However, this study abroad experience changed my life and career philosophy. Through coursework, field research, and learning Kiswahili, I explored the delicate balance between protecting nature to promote biodiversity and preserving traditions in local communities in northern Tanzania—home to iconic spots like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater., As a lover of stars, one of my most unforgettable memories was witnessing the night sky in Tanzania. Millions of stars lit up the darkness, and the sight was mesmerizing. Being surrounded by the Milky Way was hypnotic—it felt as though I was enveloped by the universe itself, offering a humbling perspective of worlds and stars beyond our own. My research focused on tusk breakage in African elephants in various protected areas in Tanzania. Tusks are the canine teeth of African elephants, and tusk fractures can have severe health implications, as they risk exposing the pulp and leaving elephants vulnerable. Thus, this topic is directly related to my career path! Today, I work as a general dentist in Oahu, Hawaii, but the lessons I learned in Tanzania continue to shape both my personal and professional life. Beyond the invaluable environmental and academic knowledge I gained, my time immersed in Tanzanian culture taught me the importance of genuinely listening, observing, and connecting with others. In a world that often moves too quickly, this experience instilled in me a deeper sense of patience, empathy, and appreciation for the relationships we build—whether with people, nature, or our shared history. Tanzania taught me to look beyond the surface, seek understanding, and honour the interconnectedness of all things—lessons I now carry with me every day in my practice and life. by @meeesh.z
