🏡 What is a reverse mortgage—and could it benefit you?

A reverse mortgage may allow homeowners age 62 and older to access a portion of their home’s equity without a required monthly mortgage payment.

In June 2026 alone, approximately 32 new FHA-insured reverse mortgages were recorded across the broader Washington metropolitan area—including eight in Prince George’s County and four in Washington, D.C.

✅ Potential benefits:

• Supplement your retirement income
• Pay for home repairs or medical expenses
• Improve your monthly cash flow
• Remain in your home while maintaining ownership

⚠️ Important considerations:

• It’s a loan—not free money
• Interest and fees increase the balance over time
• Your remaining home equity may decrease
• Property taxes, insurance, HOA fees, and maintenance must still be paid
• The loan generally becomes due when you sell, permanently move, or pass away

A reverse mortgage can be helpful for the right homeowner—but it should always be compared with alternatives such as downsizing, selling, or using another form of home equity.
