For her Black History Month report, Sparrow told her teacher that she wanted to write it on me. 🥹

The teacher told her that she needs to be able to find information about the person online. Sparrow proceeds to inform her teacher that I haven written books, that I have a website and I wrote an article for @essence magazine.

The teacher said she could use me as a backup...at first I agreed but then I remembered to take up and remembered that I AM Black history! 🖤♥️💛💚🤍✊🏿

What does it mean to be wealthy beyond money and material assets?

At the latest BADGE Lecture Series event, presented in partnership with The August Wilson Society (@theofficialaugustwilsonsociety), Dr. LaTanya White (@meetdrwhite) and Dr. Khalid Y. Long (@khalid_yaya_phd) brought Black wealth, cultural inheritance, entrepreneurship, community, and August Wilson’s American Century Cycle into conversation.

From The Piano Lesson and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom to Jitney and Radio Golf, the discussion examined what we inherit, what we preserve, who controls the value we create, and what we ultimately pass forward.

The conversation continued into a lively audience Q&A, underscoring a definition of wealth that extends beyond capital to include knowledge, relationships, spirituality, agency, memory, and community.

Structural racism is a wicked problem.
Complex, layered, and shaped over time.

Black History Month reminds us that today’s economic inequities did not emerge overnight.
They are the result of policies, practices, and systems built across generations.
The billions invested in DEI matter.
They signal awareness and effort.
But they are not a singular solution for Black entrepreneurs navigating structures that were never designed for equitable access.
Progress requires historical understanding, structural redesign, and sustained commitment beyond statements or short term investments.

What might change if we approached inclusion with the same long term lens history demands?

Black businesses and technology were not historically paired by design.
Not because innovation was absent, but because access was restricted.

Black entrepreneurs have always built, adapted, and created within constraints.
Today, many are reshaping industries by developing tech enabled solutions despite longstanding structural barriers.
During Black History Month, it is important to honor this continuum.
The history of exclusion, and the present reality of innovation, exist side by side.Racial equity in business is not about potential. It is about access, infrastructure, and opportunity.
What becomes possible when innovation is supported rather than constrained?

When we talk about capital gaps, we have to talk about history.
Redlining and the GI Bill shaped who could accumulate assets, build businesses, and invest in innovation.

Those policies did not just limit wealth. They limited infrastructure, exposure, and access to technology that fuels scale.

This helps explain why so many Black businesses remain undercapitalized and under tech enabled. It is not about vision or intelligence. It is about systems that decided who would be resourced early and who would not.

Understanding this context allows us to address today’s disparities with accuracy instead of assumption.

How does acknowledging this history change the way you think about business growth and innovation?

Plessy v. Ferguson didn’t just shape legal history. It shaped access.
For Black entrepreneurs, its legacy still influences who gets invited into rooms, conversations, and capital-building networks.

Social capital matters. Relationships matter.
And understanding this history helps us name the real barriers without internalizing them.

An Indonesian woman had a vision in 2012 to empower women through e-commerce, long before the language or infrastructure caught up.
She was early.
 She was innovative.
And like many visionaries, doubt eventually crept in, not because the idea lacked merit, but because being ahead of your time can feel isolating.
I think often about how many transformative ideas are paused, reshaped, or abandoned not due to failure, but because support systems lag behind vision.
Innovation doesn’t only need courage. It needs context, community, and continuity.

Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome offers a powerful lens for understanding America’s legacy of enduring injury and racialized trauma.

It reminds us that history doesn’t stay in the past.
It shapes identity, behavior, and how people move through systems today. Naming that truth matters, especially when we’re trying to make sense of the present with honesty and care.

This work continues to be essential reading.

History doesn’t disappear just because time passes.

Decisions like Plessy v. Ferguson shaped who had access to capital and networks, and those patterns still echo today.

Black entrepreneurs building despite that reality are not anomalies. They are evidence of vision, strategy, and persistence.
This work deserves recognition.

Dynastic families build more than generational wealth.
They cultivate multiple forms of wealth and think three generations ahead.
If you’ve ever felt like the outlier in your own family because you see further, you’re not alone.
That awareness is often the beginning of legacy work.
