As a freshman in college, I had no idea what my path would look like. I’d almost failed high school. I felt like the black sheep in most rooms, especially traditional classrooms. For a long time, that felt like a flaw.
That same year was the very first season of Shark Tank. Glued to that show, I was thinking, “those are my people”. Builders. Dreamers. Visionaries. People who learn by doing.
So I made a plan. I’d study fine arts at DAAP and entrepreneurship at the Lindner College of Business. Someday I’d build a business in the arts. And then another. And someday, maybe, I’d step into that Tank to share an idea of my own. To celebrate every black sheep who doesn’t belong in a cubicle or a conventional classroom.

Well, 17 years later, that someday is now.

The tears at the beginning of this video from last May- that was a moment I chose to bookmark and CELEBRATE GROWTH after the hard, unseen parts of building something from nothing. I shared them because I’m committing to celebrating growth more, and 100% of entrepreneurs need to do that too. Maybe we’d all be a little easier on ourselves. And a little happier along the way. Because then, imagine if that “gain mindset” becomes contagious to all the baby black sheep watching us?
Let’s make sure our next generation of entrepreneurs know (and truly believe) that they’re unstoppable.

This is a long shot.
Here I am in 2019, standing in front of our Franklinton home when it was just gravel, studs, and a very special idea!!!

Seven years later, that idea has become a pandemic-proof profitable business welcoming tens of thousands of people through its doors, made national television, and grabbed the attention of investors.

And for the last four years, I’ve been trying to find a home for Makers #2.
Four. Years.
I’ve gotten incredibly close more than once, only to end up back at square one.
It’s been discouraging, but mama didn’t raise no quitter!
The numbers make sense, the margins are strong. I’ve never been a day late on rent. I bring people from other zip codes to the neighborhood. I’m the tenant everyone wants!

If you’re developer, property owner, or know any, please keep me in mind.
Maybe someone reading this knows someone who knows someone. A share could put this in front of the person who has what I’m looking for. ❤️

You think you know where you’re headed. You set the quarterly goals, annual milestones, and pull the all-nighters.
Then, those plans are pulled from underneath you in a split second. You fall off the train, and not only do you miss the destination, but the train runs you over. You need time to recover, time to grieve the loss of those plans that got you out of bed each morning.
The lesson: you can’t control your way to results. Let go.

It wasn’t until recently, my 12th year in entrepreneurship, that I learned my most important goal is to seek peace when I’m in the valleys and practice humility when I’m on the hills. That’s it. The recipe for a stronger leader, a present mother, and a selfless friend. And WHO I am to those I LOVE… that matters far more than scaling my business.
If you’ve been blessed with the entrepreneurial spirit, don’t lose yourself in it.
What you build 👏🏼 does 👏🏼 not 👏🏼 define you.
HOW IT BUILDS YOU 👏🏼 IS👏🏼 THE REAL MF BLESSSSSSSING.

And PS - to those who it applies to: the greatest act of worship is to praise Him in your pain.

Being a Bearcat for life means our students carry UC with them long after graduation.

For @meg.pando, Class of 2013, her time in @uc_daap studios and @lindnercollege classrooms wasn’t just about what she learned — it was about how she learned to collaborate, build, and take risks. Those lessons helped spark @makers.social, a Columbus-based DIY project bar where people come to create and connect.

And last week? Megan took that vision to Shark Tank, where she pitched Makers Social and secured a deal with Kevin O’Leary to support the next phase of her growth.

UC prepares Bearcats to think boldly, take risks, and build their futures. Congratulations, Megan!
